I just started a new character and at the start when your about to be executed in Helgen, I wondered around a few different doors. I went to the furthest door to enter Helgen keep and ended up starting with Hadvar (imperial) instead of Ralof (stormcloak). I never knew this before and think there are probably people like me who didn't, so wanted to share this. Hope it helps

yup, there is an option as to which side you can start with but neither really makes a difference other than which door you go through first. You end up in the same place. Well, one slight difference is who you get to stay with in Riverwood.

exactly, which is why I go imperial all the time, free smithing gear.
