You could have just shot the mechanism for lowering the ramp with an arrow which was hinted at if you bothered to ask Brynjolf about getting into Mercer's house.

The first time around B never gave me this "optional" quest. I had to watch a video to realize it. The 2nd time around I did this quest I was able to get the optional part. Very odd :\

I had much more trouble finding Mercer Frey in that cave full of Falmer and Dwemer and whatnot.

I got the plans before being given the quest using the parkour method and now brynjolf has disappeared and so has karliah
