the only thing in G.O.T that can really be compared to is Skyrim:
Winterhold-Winterfell
Riverwood-Riverrun
Summerset Isles- Summer Isles (I know it's not in Skyrim)
The Reach-The Reach
so on and so forth
But seeing how A Game of Thrones predates skyrim. I doubt Martin ripped off the series. Secondly the comparisons are in names alone. There are no Orcs in Westeros or Elves nor an Empire based loosely on Rome. What we have in the Song of Fire and Ice books is your typical fantasy world. These things happen look at the Lord of the Rings and compare that to the ES series, they at least have Orcs and Elves. (and Sean Bean)

Predating Skyrim doesn't mean much. Tamriel started with Arena, which predated GoT at bare minimum in release and there's no telling when Arena/TES was first conceptualized, although reports are from Bethesda that they started thinking about what would eventually become Arena while tossing ideas around with the team from Wizardry.

But if you really want to take the gloves off software-wise, it could be said that nothing in the CRPG arena can go a minute without thanking Zork, which in turn must spend its time thanking Colossal Cave Adventure. So now we're back to '76. And when you go back that far, you're smack into Elric of Melnibone, Book of Swords, and then game-wise, TSR and D&D territory, which only of course came well after The Hobbit and Conan the Barbarian.

And one can of course make the argument that all of this, swords and sorcery, gods, demons, stories of evil and valiant kings queens and champions, could not have been possible without the Bible, which is one of the greatest storybooks of all time.

It's really about where/when/who you want to stop saluting.

Right. Except for, you know:

- Dragons.
- Religious controversy.
- Assassination of a king.
- A kingsmoot.
- Political rebellion.
- Attempted secession of regions of a kingdom.
- Civil war.

Oh no, there are no real similarities between them at all...

Except for Dragons, that is basically a normal day in TES lore.

For the record, Skyrim actually was inspired by A Song of Ice and Fire. End of story.

Why? Because you said so? C'mon. Either show and prove or fail. And with all your proving remember that Bethesda was doing this before the GoT books were even written and acting as if they needed GoT to conceive their 5th ES game is about as ludicrous as Kiss needing inspiration from Slipknot before getting on stage in makeup.

Like I said in the post you jumped over. So long as I can show you every one of those list items in a 2000 year old storybook available in the top drawer of every motel in the country you've got no case. There isn't a single one of those plot lines unique to GoT. In fact, some are so commonplace and unspectacular they don't even require a fantasy backdrop at all because they occur regularly in real life. Arguably four of those things are happening in the US right now including kingsmoots, since that's just a fancy name for a popular vote - nothing more.

Popular artists these days usually do just fine and so do their fans right up to the point where they start trying to pretend the world didn't start until they showed up. The fact of the matter is that GoT did not invent the fantasy genre, nor did the writers invent the plot lines they use. It's far too late for that. As in thousands of years too late. GoT is the latest and most current variation on a theme, and that's about it. Don't lessen it by handing it credit for what came well before it as if it really needs that credit.

TES started as a homebrew D&D setting. If anything, TES was inspired by D&D and grew into its own world.

We already know where A Song of Ice and Fire's inspiration came from; history. Now, the TV series is another thing. They could've very well borrowed the aesthetic of Skyrim to fit into the gritty fantasy theme or they could just be recreating the descriptions in the novels (I haven't read them).

It doesn't matter though, because inspiration is just that. You might as well say that all of fantasy ripped of history and legends.

How do you backstab a Dragon?
On another note has anyone been watching Vikings on The History channel?
YES! Down and dirty Nordic fun! But talk about a bunch of drama queens.

Anybody seen the SciFi Movie Vikingdom? It's like Vikings with bad acting and special effects... oh wait...

There's only one hell, the one we live in now.
I think George R Martin also said his story was inspired by some turtles he had that used to fight each other, or something along those lines.

Skyrim began conceptualization in 2006. A full year before HBO bought the rights to make the show. Though Skyrim could still copy the books I guess, but don’t agree with it.
