You'll finally be able to play an official version of Final Fantasy VI on your PC in a few days, thanks to Steam, but it may not be the version you wanted. Square has chosen to port its mobile version of the 1994 classic, which will be rejiggered to respond to keyboard and mouse.

Why is this a problem? Because the mobile version has remastered HD graphics. Normally this kind of thing would be what the player WANTS, but in this case, the replacement graphics are so lazily put together that it hurts the overall impression of the game. Most FF fans prefer the pixely original.

There are still ways to get the untampered-with game, if you look. You can play the VERY original version, "Final Fantasy III" on the Wii U through the Wii Virtual Console. You can also find a version that uses the same graphics, but an updated translation, on the Playstation Store (this version was released for the PS1 as part of the compilation "Final Fantasy Chronicles"). Then there's always the original cart, if you don't mind paying over $100.

The blasphemous PC version comes out December 16 on Steam.
