If you're playing an Imperial, I just saw a mod on Steam, where you have a follower who is an Imperial General, lives at Fort Greymoor, and you can raise her an army of however many heavy-armor Imperials you want. It looked interesting.
 
Seems OP and not compatible with the story and plot.

Although if he was a lieutenant and there was a limit on the soldiers you could recruit then that could work.

I second these.

I consider ESFC (even if you only pick the "Requirements only" version) a must, if planning to do the Companions questline.
CWO makes the Civil War a lot more challenging, but also adds an "awesome factor" that the vanilla questline seriously lacks.
