Crypt of the NecroDancer, which was released last month, is a roguelike sprite-based dungeon crawler with a twist: it's also a rhythm game. To progress, you not only have to bop monster after monster, but hop constantly to the beat of whatever music is being played in the dungeon. This music could be anything -- you can import your own MP3s into the game.

I'm telling you this not just because it's a good game, but because someone's created a mod for it that replaces every graphic and sprite in the game with Mega Man characters. You can play as Mega Man (or one of eight other characters) and all levels, enemies and graphics have been redone in the Capcom NES style.

The only thing the mod is missing is real 8-bit Mega Man tunes. As the creator explained, it's not that he's afraid of copyright (obviously this wouldn't have been made otherwise) but because he didn't want to force them on anyone. Apparently the rhythm of Mega Man chiptunes accelerate the game's pace, making it much harder. If you want Mega Man music, though, it's an easy fix with the MP3 importer.

You might want to get used to the actual game before you apply this makeover -- some of the monsters are more dangerous than others, and once they are converted to Mega Man bots, newcomers will have a very hard time telling which is which. Crypt of the NecroDancer is currently available for PC, Mac and Linux.
