Dave, The Quiet One.
PART 1

Now this quest is not your usual quest where everything flows smoothly. Nor do you need to use a weapon.

I did 2 bounty jobs for the Steward of Windhelm & then left Windhelm for 12 hours ( Real Time ) & did other quests or side quests elsewhere in Skyrim.

Now I have returned to Windhelm & low and behold there is a dead woman amongst the gravestones with a Stormcloak guard and a few people standing around.

The first thing I did at this point was do a **** MANUAL SAVE *******

So if you happen to choose the wrong speech line or things go south fast ( Stuff Up ) you have a save point to restart the quest.

Right talk to the guard and follow the speech prompts, your aim here is to help so choose the correct speech option.
He will tell you to ask the other 3 people there if they saw anything talk to all 3 then talk to the guard again.
Tell the guard that you want to help investigate the crime & he will tell you that you need to speak to Jorleif, the Jarl's Steward.

**** Do another Manual save at this point *********

Go to the Palace of Kings & talk to Jorleif, he will welcome your assistance on the case.
Now, go back out to the crime scene and talk to the guard & he will tell you to talk to Helgrid.

So go to the Hall Of The Dead and talk to Helgrid, which is a real short conversation...lol. After speaking with her go back out to the crime scene and follow the trail of blood back to Hjerim ( The house that you will be able to buy soon ). Now, there isn't trail of blood leading there but if you walk towards the house you will see blood splashed on the path or steps at intervals.

Now your quest will update & tell you to get access to Hjerim so go and talk to Jorleif and he will tell you that Tova Shatter Shield has the key so go talk to her. Now if it's during the day then there is a very good chance she is near the merchants in front of The White Phial.

If you choose the right speech line and tell her you are investigating the crime and then select the next speech line telling her you need access to Hjerim, she will then give you the key.

*** If you have reached this point of the quest then **** Do another Manual save *********

Go to Hjerim, enter and look for clues, investigate the blood splattered chest that is across the room. Open the chest and take the contents which are 11 Notes titled " Beware The Butcher " and a Journal titled " Butcher Journal ". Keep searching, if you walk straight down the room from the chest to the other end & investigate the wardrobe that is in front of you as well as the table in the small alcove.

Search this table, there is some pamphlets on the right hand shelf, take these and you will then see an Amulet, which you take. Thanks to Gemini Sierra for pointing this out

Then look at the wardrobe on your right, open it then open the false back panel & walk into the room beyond.

Here you find an Altar with parts of skeletons on it as well as on the floor. There is another journal on the Altar titled " Butcher Journal # 2 ", take it and go report your findings to Jorleif.

*** If you have reached this point of the quest then **** Do another Manual save *********

YYou talk to Jorleif about the butcher & he will ask if you been talking to Viola Giordana. You can mention the Amulet and he will tell you to take it to Calixto's House of Curiosities.

Go find Viola Giordana, just look for a white haired woman with a white arrow pointing down above head.
She is usually walking in the area between The Palace of the Kings and the Front Gate of Windhelm.

Talk to her & follow the prompts so you tell her you found a journal on Hjerim. Now go back to Jorleif ( Again..lol ) & report this new finding to him. After the short speech options & if you chose the correct options Blood On The Ice is completed.
But you can't initiate any conversation with Jorleif as he walks away to go arrest the Court Wizard. Well be damned if I'm missing that so follow him. All you need to do is watch nothing else.

I was amazed that even after the Quest is complete, he really does go off and go through the stages of actually arresting the Mage all with full dialogue. WHY ? Cos they are as obsessed with creating the game as we are with playing it.

NB - I assume you know there is a 2nd Part to this Quest, but dont want to Spoiler too much.

as a further spoiler....

that's not the end of the quest.
In fact, it's a wrong choice.
there's an amulet in the Hjerim that you need to investigate. Off the top of my head I can't remember how that works. I do know that you take it to the museam curator (go in front gate, turn right, head to corner, name starts with a C ). He'll tell you about it and ask to buy it. SELL IT because if you don't it's glitched and stays in inventory. I think he helps implicate the mage too.

If you've had the mage arrested, leave Windhelm and come back in three or four days and there will be another body and the Guest starts up again. You have to talk to Jorleif, the mage and Viola (who will be at the scene I think) and they point out who the real murder is.

On my last character I found the Amulet, but when I did the Quest this time on my current character I never found it. I'll go through my save game files and see if I still have the file from the beginning of the quest.

The amulet is on the small shelf in the back of the main room next to the hidden door. The one with a pile of the butcher fliers on it.

Thanks I'll go look, I'm just going through my save game files to see if I still have a file when I did the quest. If I find one, which I should as I haven't cleaned them out for a few days, I'll go back and check it out.

Ok, I reloaded a save game from just before I enter Hjerim & I found the Amulet. I'll continue doing the Quest from this point & I'll edit the walk through accordingly, Thanks Sierra.

Ok, I've edited it and included what Gemini Sierra told me about where to find the Amulet. Thanks guys for the input.

There are actually more glitches if you turn in the court wizards, like the quest suggests, including the possibility of the second dead body never showing up and the murderer staying in the house and his essential tag being messed up making him unkillable and giving you a small bounty every time you attempt to kill him. There is also a glitch where the quest marker points you to the mage, yet he will not give the dialog to further the quest along. All of these glitches have occurred for me, my brother, or my friend (Xbox).

I would actually suggest skipping the whole second part of the quest by ignoring Viola and immediately talking to the court wizard, who will trigger the second part of the quest immediately, telling you to patrol the stone quarter tomorrow night. Since there is no quest marker over him, he can usually be found in his room, which is upstairs; Enter the Palace of Kings and go in the door on the left, his room is all the way at the end.

Also, it's advisable that you take the amulet and sell it to Calixto for 500 gold, as it allow you to later find out what the amulet actually does, if you don't it will remain "Strange Amulet" and will be marked as a quest item forever. Do this Before you talk to Viola, as talking to her will take the quest marker off Calixto, making him more difficult to find.

If you turn in the mage I would also suggest waiting and doing the entire quest without stopping midway through, as this is the most glitchy quests in the entire game.

There are a lot of glitches & other bugs associated with this quest & the fixes are included in the next patch as stated here........

  • Fixed numerous issues with “Blood on the Ice” not triggering properly
  • In “Blood on the Ice”, Calixto can now be killed if player owns a house in Windhelm

I'm not really that optimistic about if the patch will actually solve all the problems with this quest, just because there are so many of them associate with it. For instance, I didn't own the house and Calixto wasn't killable, nor would he leave the secret room in the house. I did eventually get feed up and buy the house anyway. It just adds character now that I have a homicide guy with a dagger that tries to kill me whenever I enter the house. I just closed up the closet and he kind of just stays in there unless I get to close.

Each to their own then, I'll wait & see if the patch fixes the problems before going any further with this quest.

I'm back, bitches
Yeah, another thing, don't buy Hjerim before you finish the quest. That will bring on another bug/glitch. I bought Hjerim, then talked to the court mage, and now I have a murderer living in my house who tries to kill me whenever I come in. And I can't seem to fix it in any way. He won't leave. Haha.
