BioWare's next big RPG will be Shadow Realms, a PC RPG with a co-op twist. The company revealed the new game at the Gamescom conference yesterday in Cologne, Germany.

In Shadow Realms four players will fight together through a dark fantasy world, united against a Shadow Lord who is also controlled by another player.

Why yes, it does sound like an RPG version of Turtle Rock Studios' upcoming players-versus-player-controlled-monster shooter Evolve. Thanks for pointing that out. But BioWare claims it is shooting for a deep experience that recaptures the feel of old-school pen and paper Dungeons and Dragons, where the players will be a party and the player controlling the Shadow Lord will in effect be the Dungeon Master, setting obstacles and traps for them to overcome.

IGN has four minutes of gameplay from the Gamescom show floor. It looks very fast-paced, action-oriented and hack-and-slash.

According to the game's website, Shadow Realms will be released episodic content, with new chapters in the story coming out regularly. Player choice will impact the ongoing story. BioWare also promises deep customization options for both adventurers and Shadow Lords.

No release date was given, but Shadow Realms is already going into alpha so you won't have to wait that long to play it. You can sign up for the alpha here if you want to try it out.
