Today Atlus revealed an English translation for a new JRPG titled "Legend of Legacy" (that title makes no sense in Japanese either). It'll be a turn-based exploration game that be played seven different ways, as you can select anybody in the game's cast to be your main character.

The great news is that a Murderers Row of Japanese JRPG talent was involved in the creation of this game. The writer behing Chrono Trigger, the designers and illustrators behind the SaGa series and, most importantly, Masataka Matsuura. That's the guy who wrote 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors and its sequel. There was a third game teased in that sequel which Matsuura's parent company chose not to make. The fact that he's getting work is good, and maybe if response to this is strong enough, he'll find the funding somewhere to make 999 #3.

The game will appear for 3DS this fall, at the standard price of $39.99. A deluxe box with a soundtrack would not surprise me, but no such product has been announced yet. See Atlus's press release below for the full details.

Explore the Mysterious Island of Avalon in The Legend of Legacy

Spiritual Successor to a Classic JRPG Series is Coming to the Nintendo 3DS this Fall

IRVINE, Calif. - June 11, 2015 - Seven adventurers are about to embark on the quest of a lifetime as they explore the island of Avalon and unravel the mysteries of its dark past in The Legend of Legacy, published by FuRyu in Japan, and coming this fall, ATLUS will release the RPG in the Americas for the Nintendo 3DS™ system. The game is developed by a core group of legendary developers (Chrono Cross, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy XIII, and more) who came together to create this brand new IP where players can choose from seven characters to explore the forgotten history of Avalon. The game will be released in retail stores and digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo 3DS for $39.99/CA$49.99. In The Legend of Legacy, Seven adventurers - Liber, Meurs, Owen, Bianca, Garnet, Eloise, Filmia - arrive on the mysterious island of Avalon to pursue their own agenda as explorers. They team up with two of the other adventurers to achieve their objectives - be it exploring the island for treasure, looking for the "god" on the island, or recovering lost memories. But things change when they discover a singing stone that causes the party to see phantasms of Avalon's forgotten history.

In addition to exploring the island of Avalon, Combat will offer plenty of challenges in The Legend of Legacy. Combat is turn-based, but players will have the option to create their own formations tailored to their party of three, meaning each party member can be put into a different combat role (defending, attacking, supporting, etc.) at any given time. Formations can be saved and changed between turns as well, giving players plenty of options to maximize their strategies.

Other gameplay features in The Legend of Legacy include:
  • Seven Unique Perspectives - Each character in The Legend of Legacy has their own motivation for exploring Avalon, and their individual conclusion at the story's resolution. Play through as each character to see them all!
  • Combat Gets Classless - Managing formations to instruct specific combat roles instead of fixed classes adds a different level of challenge for battle enthusiasts.
  • Legendary Development - Illustrator Tomomi Kobayashi (SaGa series), renowned composer Masashi Hamauzu (SaGa, Final Fantasy XIII), writer Masato Kato (Chrono Trigger), game designer Kyoji Koizumi (SaGa series), and Masataka Matsuura (999: 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors) all come together to create this brand new experience.
  • Balanced for the West - Based on user feedback following the Japanese release, several gameplay adjustments were made to enhance the gameplay. More details to come later!

The Legend of Legacy is a brand new RPG developed by FuRyu and published in the Americas by ATLUS. The game will have both physical and digital releases in the Americas. The game is not yet rated by the ESRB. Additional details about packaging and release date to come soon! Official website: http://www.atlus.com/legendoflegacy
