    Shadowmere is immortal. So killing him won't work. What I recommend you do is get Arvak and use him so he becomes your regular horse. Arvak can be killed but also can be summoned by you, so when you need to sneak just get off, and he'll disappear. And when you're done, just summon him again.

    I think your brother is simply growing tired of the wanderers life. I have a friend, Kharjo. We used to travel skyrim, fighting bandits, until I felt his heart wasn't in it. I asked him, and he said he missed the warm sands of his home. We parted ways and he seemed much happier.
