PC Start up Bug

I try launching the game through steam, and the game comes up normally, the screen with Play, Options, Data Files, Tech Support, Exit.

I press play, the screen collapses, but another launches, and the game doesn't launch. I have already played the game, I know my computer can handle it, but this bug will not allow me to play it any longer. I am using Windows Xp, I have a decent enough Graphics Card. Can anyone help me on this?

Ive got the same problem. It looked as if there was going to be an update and then goes back to the play screen. Happens everytime I click the play button.
I am running win 7 64 bit and was fine until today.

I'm having the same problem. I open the startup menu, click the play button and it just opens up the startup menu again. I've been playing Skyrim since the day it came out, and it was fine until now.

Same thing happened to me yesterday and I found a post that explained how to get around it. I can't seem to find that post any more, but here's what to do:

Right Click On Game in Steam
Click on Properties of "Skyrim"
Under LOCAL FILES TAB
Click on verify Integrity of Game Cache

Let it update itself and try again.
