I am a serial hoarder and seller, that's why. Honestly, it seems like the only reason to save up is to buy all possible properties and their upgrades, which I did. I have nearly every special 'named' weapon I've ever found mounted and on display too. I think if I ever play this game again once I feel like I've 'finished' this character I'm not going to worry so much about looting and lugging around as much as I did. There isn't much point.

I agree with you 100%. I am on my 4th playthrough and I pass up so much stuff. I carry only what I know will net me decent cash and what I need.

you gotta be decadent and buy horses then slaughter them with your might, because you can!

Bahahahahahaha, every time i buy a horse, it dies within 20 minutes. Something or someone always jumps out and kills the horse before I can do anything. I gave up on horses and followers.

Perkless in Skyrim

Bad to the Dragonbone.
Fur and hide armor. Longbows. Hide shields. These are just some of the things I still consider loot-worthy. Any battles that take place on the open roads of Skyrim tend to leave all kinds of weapons which will just sit there (often in mid air!) littering the landscape so I snarf those as well. I will also grab any and all types of arrows since they weigh nothing and will net me 1 gold each due to my Speech skill being at 100.

On my next character I don't know if I'll bother getting the Black Star. I can afford paying 1000 gold a pop for filled Grand soul gems and anything else I might need. I buy out a merchant's entire stock of ingredients then sell them my potions and take it all back plus whatever gold they have. I have discovered it's worth getting the Merchant perk in Speech just to be able to sell everything to everybody. So now there are even more coffers for me to drain dry and STILL no good way to spend my hoard.

Dunno how everyone gets so rich. I take my share of loot...sell all my dragon bones/scales, gems, etc...usually end up having so much I get from vendor to vendor, city to city to sell off my items.

I spend coin on grand soul gems and smithing equipment. Also, if a vendor has a good item I'll pay top dollar for it. On previous characters I used the coin to train and NEVER had any money.

Currently level 30 with a warrior/theif...have 20k gold, only one house. So, probably hoarding a bit too much if you have unlimited gold.

Alchemy is where it's at. And I don't train. I usually forget to do it and if you're gonna do it, you should do it a lot or don't bother. And it's true the character I had that trained often was frequently low on funds.

I buy filled Grand soul gems because otherwise I'm limited on my options even with the Black Star. Not enough bad guys with Grand souls and too much hassle to hunt them down. I try to mine my own ore or smelt dwarven junk for ingots whenever I can. The Transmute spell helps a lot in the early game as well.

I stopped selling dragon bones and scales since that's the only way I can make Dragon armor and by the time I have the smithing perk for it I don't NEED to sell the extras for cash. By then Draugr Deathlords have ebony weapons and those will drain a merchant dry with just one or two sold.

I think it's about time to try a totally self sufficient character that never buys from merchants what he can make on his own as well as limit what he loots unless he can use it himself for better effect.

Agreed. Level 47 and I have all the houses and upgrades except for Windhelm, and I have 100K in my pocket. Time to go d o the main quest, then on to the liberation of Skyrim! I plan on equipping every follower with Dragon Armor as well. But I don't think this will help my excess cash problem...

The Progeny of Vikings
I hit the one MILLION mark in cash a couple of days ago, and the only thing I have left to buy is the house in Markarth and horses (the former I will buy, the latter I don't find so useful). I don't even have any of the speech perks; I just hoard and sell lots of stuff. However, since I hit 1000,000 I decided to stop wasting my time hoarding. Now I pretty much leave everything lying around, even potions, excepting those I will put to personal use. I also have such huge piles of pretty much every type of alchemical ingredient in my 2 crafting hubs (Solitude and Riften) that I don't bother harvesting them any longer, apart from rare ones. Nowaydays I only grab soul gems, gold and arrows, which are both weightless, and stamina & healing potions. It stings me a little to leave ebony greatswords and such behind for some other greedy adventurer to get his paws on, but hey, it saves me a trip to the market.

This will be one of my greatest hurdles. Those ebony weapons and armor are worth big bucks and I am a compulsive looter. It seems like a crime NOT to take and sell them. I haven't even done it yet and I'm already wincing.

I had so much stuff I horded I went to the center of town and dropped a bunch of swords, bows and gear. I thought they would grab it, instead they picked it up and gave it back to me.

"I think you dropped this, it looked important"

ugh!! just my luck, I cant give the stuff away.o_O

I don't get how everybody has so much money, I have like 10k and that's more than average for me...

Yeah, I still struggle with it, too. It's horrible, but I try and convince myself my game time is better spent questing and exploring instead of buying and selling.

I know this thread is a few months old but I just got Skyrim. Been playing about 50 hours or so, and only into the 2nd quest in the main story line. Which for me, is NOT good. I feel like I'm wasting a lot time. I'm not a big RPG'er, but I do like the adventure, just not all the micromanagement.

So just last night I realized one of the things taking up so much extra time is looting and selling stuff. I wouldn't say I'm a hoarder, because I don't hold on to things. I only loot to sell stuff to make gold. Or ingredients for alchemy, and some stuff for smithing, but not much. I DON'T pick up books except spell tomes or high-value books, but again, only to sell for gold, and I don't pick up other junk like dinner-ware, baskets, etc. Even food, I collect some stuff for making vegetable soup or venison stew, or elswere fondue.

But I do loot all armor and weapons, using the trick (still not sure if it's a feature or glitch) of dropping stuff I loot and having my follower pick it up so my follower can carry and infinite amount of stuff.

So I've realized that this takes a LOT of extra time to drop and get the follower to pick stuff up every time I reach my weight limit. Last night it took me about 3 hours to finish a dungeon that probably would have taken only an hour, if that, if I had just gone through without looting everything and having to drop stuff and have the follower pick it up. And then of course a ton of time to sell between trading with the follower, then merchants not having enough gold, and having to wait the 48 hours for gold to replenish 2 or 3 times (even when selling among mutilple merchants in town).

So I'm trying to decide if I'll feel comfortable just not looting every piece of weapon or armor, and also to some extent things like hides or pelts for making leather for smithing.

So how much gold on hand is enough to feel comfortable that I'm not going to be short on it at some point. Will I stay comfortable by only carrying what I can carry and what my follower can carry by what I can give them through the trade interface? If I only keep that much and sell each time I get back to a town, will I stay at a comfortable level of gold?

Oh, I've bought Breezehome but no other houses yet, but want to. I'll feel better once I've bought more houses and aren't trying to save up for them. I haven't paid for any training yet but would like to without feeling like I'm going to constantly short of gold.

With things like hides and pelts (I seem to collect tons of wolf pelts and several other hides every time I go out), will I have plenty for making leather if I only bring back a couple each time, to then have enough leather for smithing? (I guess the same could be said of things like ores, ingots, etc., but I don't seem to come across tons of that stuff, the hides/pelts are the main thing I get tons of.)

To be clear, this is not about any compulsion to loot just because I want to, it's purely about wanting to be comfortable with having enough gold to not worry about it, and supplies for smithing (and I guess to a point, also cooking and alchemy, but I've got a pretty good handle on those, it's mainly about the weapons and armor, and hides/pelts), and not wanting to waste a bunch of extra time in the game if I don't need to.

Thank you.
