I can't help but be a little be disappointed with Conjuration in Skyrim (and Oblivion, for that matter - never played the earlier ones). I have often throughout the years enjoyed playing conjurers in different RPG's, but the conjuring options in these games seem really limited. You can't actually conjure that many different things! I want to be able to conjure a Vampire, or a Giant, or something at higher levels. I suppose the explanation is that you're summoning things from Oblivion and not the real world, but I just get tired of summoning nothing but Atronachs all the time. Does anyone else feel that way? At least they added a few conjurations with the DLCs.

I mostly used Bound Bow or Bound Sword to work up Archery and one-handed abilities. I use Atronachs mostly for a fight especially in a group, friendly fire bites, lol!

I hadn't thought about having more to Conjure though, although as you progress in the game, you do get a couple of "unusual" conjurations that can be handy.

a lot of the spells are underwhelming, but once you unlock the master spell dead thrall, you can have any npc follower, you can even thrall this boss wizard that teleports and he uses that ability, you can also give them custom enchanted weapons and armour.

Familiars , 3 kinds of Atronach , Dremora Lords! , Arniel`s Shade , and the Spectral Assassin all can be conjured in vanilla game , not counting Call of Valor Dragon Shout for a Sovngarde hero.
As stated above , the DLCs bring in lots of others including werebears , a spectral horse , and a shout out for an undead Dragon who also summons his own minions.

And you can Dead Thrall Volkihar and Master Vampires with the Necromage Perk !

It`s good to be a Skyrim conjurer imho

Just one word if you really want to wreck havoc at high levels- KARSTAAG !

How do you backstab a Dragon?
I kind of like conjuration. It's easy to level and the bound weapons can be useful. Plus it's a hoot to sick the dead kin against other npcs. I agree that the Dead Thrall is great. If you're a Vampire it's awesome as well. I also like the stone that lets you an army. My current Nord Necromancer is having a blast.

Dremoras can be fun as well, although only the Storm Antronach usually works for me (I use a lot of lightning), but fire & frost antronachs have their uses too, especially at lower levels.

Keep trying it. I used to scoff as well, but it's actually a pretty robust system once you figure out how to use it and there's nothing better than thralling a high level enemy to do your bidding after you kick their butt. Talk about payback!

Well, I've never been into magic. But about a month ago I finally made a full blown mage character, who got up to 100 in conjuration and two other schools of magic.

Honestly... I thought it was fine, due to the permanent thrall master spells. Especially the dead thrall, can pretty much pick any person in the game. You can also get Dremora Lords, Spectural Assassin, etc. And at least you get to choose from different types of Atronaches (I always liked the storm ones, pretty cool looking).

Between this school of magic and the others, it was overwhelming with all the spell choices. So I thought conjuration was pretty good, that master spell makes it worth it. I had orchendor and a storm thrall and Serana following me everywhere, unstoppable.

When in doubt, follow the fox.
I'm always like, oh yeah, maybe I'll remember to conjure something this time. I only use it to help myself level up. Of course, I've never had a dead thrall. It sounds like I'm missing out!

Plus, it's fun to give your follower the sanguine rose, cast two of your own dremora lords with the twin souls perk, and watch the keystone kops havoc ensue.
