>> If you can buy only one right now and the other later, I would pick Dragonborn. Reasons ? You will get more shouts, armors, weapons, enchanting effects ( Chaos = the best in the game ), an additional house, money and of course you will have the pleasure to kill Miraak and get his armor and weapon.
Also, you will get the Waking Dreams Black book which will allow you to change your skill tree distribution perks at the cost of Dragon souls gained by you after killing dragons. However, if you buy this one, make sure that you have at least 10 dragon souls available in your inventory to use them for those shouts that you will get, especially, the last Dragon Aspect shout that you must get before you ride the dragon that takes you to Miraak. If you do not have a dragon soul available in that moment, you miss the chance forever.
While Miraak is still alive, he will not let you suck a dragon soul so it is crucial that you start Dragonborn with at least 10 dragon souls available in your inventory. After you clean all the Stones, which it is a quest right before facing Miraak, you will be able to restore your ability to suck a dragon soul if you kill a dragon but do not rely on that at all because dragons may not show up and if so, it would be just one at the most. If you go back to Skyrim to suck more dragon souls, it would not work as well. So make sure, that you have those 10 dragon souls before starting Dragonborn.
After you kill Miraak, you will suck out of his body, 3 more dragon souls so you can use them right away at that place to reset any skill tree that you want.
In my opinion, Dragonborn is much better than Dawnguard but to face those vamps, you would have to need to be more powerful and the dragon aspect ( that you get in Dragonborn ) will make a difference when facing those vamps. Just my 2 cents .... :)

Actually miraak doesn't absorb every soul from the dragons you kill it's just that he absorbs most of them making it hard to get a lot of them. Also there is a thread on this already if you want to check that out for more opinions but I agree get dragonborne.

BOTH! They're so different (and don't forget Hearthfire if you're feeling family oriented and in a general contractor sort of mood).

Dragonborn is great because it opens up an entirely new location to explore. Dawnguard does the same but there's vampires too!

I bought all three dlcs at the same time. Dragonborn was by far my favorite. The black books are loads of fun to find and explore. With dragonborn you can also get the dwarven black bow of fate (my favorite bow in the game), deathbrand armor (stahlrim light armor with kick-ass enchantments), and you can learn a cool destruction spell whirlwind cloak. The only thing I wish was better was the story. I definitely enjoyed the story of dawnguard more.

I would with Dawnguard as the campaign in it is usually longer than that of Dragonborn, and you can also get perks for being a vampire and werewolf as well.

I preferred Dawnguard's story by far. However, that does not mean that it is better.

While Dawnguard supplies a, in my opinon, better story, it offers little content besides that, especially compared to Dragonborn, which provides a questline, even more general quests, and finally, a whole new land to explore.

The most noticeable quest of Dawnguard, next to the questline, is the quest with the Aetherium Objects, which I believe can rip off the player.

I will not tolerate failure...
many people ma not relize this but you gain a larger map with Dawnguard then Dragonborn, with Dragonborn you get Solstheim and Apocrypha with Dawnguard you get the Forgotton Vale which is almost as Big as Solstheim plus the Soul Cairn which is As Big as Soltheim not to mention the Vampire Lord transformation and the new weapon type the Crossow as well as the ability to block out the sun if your a vampire which is quite cool also the Main questline is longer
personally I would go with Dawnguard.

Rip off? How? I always enjoy that questline.

The crown's effects only occur when you wear the crown, so it is ruining it for those who like to dress a certain way (also, it is outclassed by the Oghma Infinum glitch). The other two are not very useful...

Since I have no idea what the Oghma Infinum glitch is, I guess it's kind of moot for me. I agree, that, if you don't wear the crown (or it ruins your look), it's kind of pointless. I like it on my mages though since they don't usually wear helms (even if they wear armor). The shield is pretty cool as well. I guess I just enjoy the questline and I really do like the bow a great deal.

I don't have Dragonborn, but I played Dawnguard and it wasn't as great as I expected, however that's not to say it wasn't fun. I was in your predicament though, and picked Dawnguard, and I'm glad I got it. But now I can't wait to buy Dragonborn. Reading the opinions above mine, I would definitely go with Dragonborn.

Had all 3 for a while now and they're GRRRRREAT! To quote a famous tiger. Sure, each has it's strengths and weaknesses, but I luv how they overlap in to the vanilla. There are just so many more random encounters, even without the questlines, it would have been worth it.

Understandable. Also, the Oghma Infinium glitch is when you buy a home (or use one you already own; this also works on Hearthfire homes), and use the bookshelves to level up to the maximum with the book, the Oghma Infinium, that Hermaous Mora gave you after helping Septimus.

Oh, right, I've had that book. It always dissappears after I use it though. I'll have to look up the glitch to see what it is.

I personally would go with Dragonborn. Dragonborn is miles ahead of Dawngaurd, in my humble opinion. With Dragonborn, you get a good questline and two barren wastelands that aren't fun at all to play in, I would actually say the Soul Cairn is very not-fun. With Dragonborn you get a giant map, many qusets, new armor, new weapons, new shouts, some really cool locations, amazing NPCs, an extension to the Thieve's Guild Storyline involving Delvin and Sapphire, the best weapon enchantment in the entire game, new spells, and some great powers from the black books. Need I say more?

I've heard Dragonborn is better, but I wanted Dawnguard first since I'm into all the vampire/undead hunter stuff. Buy them both, but the consensus is to get Dragonborn first.

Btw, I've decided to finally get off my lazy ass and purchase/download the Dragonborn DLC probably on Thanksgiving Day. Do any of you who play Skyrim on a PC know if there will be any issues with downloading Dragonborn on top of all the existing mods I have currently installed? Most of them are armor, weapon, and texture mods, with very few mods that make changes to the actual dynamics of the game. I will also be downloading both the Official and Unofficial Dragonborn patches.

I'm thinking it will be ok, but I just wanted to know for sure from those of you who have already done it.

It's tough. They both are great.

I gotta lean towards Dawnguard personally. I just think it brings more to the table overall. Dragonborn does add a lot of power to the game and has a nice awe factor and nostalgia factor attached, but Dawnguard adds a lot of great practical things like crossbows, exploding bolts, arrow crafting, Perk trees for werewolves and vampires, a horse that can be conjured, a dragon that can be summoned... that in turn summons a small army to fight alongside you, each side is a fully functioning faction with it's own set of side quests, one of the most powerful followers in the game.

It is cool that Dragonborn takes you to a whole new region, but The Forgotten Vale and/or Soul Cairn are just about as big as Solstheim... Forgotten Vale might even be bigger.

Like I said, in terms of raw power, I give the nod to Dragonborn. In terms of storyline and what it adds to the vanilla game, Dawnguard by a landslide.

I prefer the way that DragonBorn fits into the vanilla game. I inactivate Dawnguard :hide: unless I'm using a character specifically for those questlines. Otherwise I get tired of the vamp attacks in towns and on NPC's. That's probably just me though.

Dawnguard has a better story and the questline is longer. You get access to Vampire Lord and Werewolf perks. You also get crossbows, Auriel's Bow and Auriel's Shield, thought it is a hidden item. You get a new Dragon ally named Durnehviir, you can learn some new summoning spells. Serana is one of the best things about the DLC, she is a very good follower!

Dragonborn's story could be better and the questline isn't very long, but you get a ton of other quests on Solstheim (one of them gives you a nice house for free). You get some awesome shouts like Dragon Aspect and Bend Will. Black Books are fun to find and they are very rewarding. It has much more items and weapons than Dawnguard

Do you prefer story and quests (Dawnguard) or content (Dragonborn)?

I like how the thread was made asking "which DLC should I buy" and the first reply spoils Dragonborn.

Anyway, OP, get both. Steam is bound to have a holiday sale, probably two, very soon.

That time has come. Beginning today Steam has the Skyrim DLCs for 50% off. To buy all three would be a few dollars more than the $20.39 that the Legendary Edition is on sale for.

I wouldn't suggest banking ten souls... that's too many. Having three in your pocket is fine since you only need to unlock Bend Will to progress the questline. Also, Miraak will not give you three souls upon dying, he gives you 10 souls at least. Also, Miraak doesn't steal every soul, just most of them (roughly 2/3 by my estimation). It's still possible to collect souls after Miraak is unlocked. Dragon Aspect and Cyclone are fine Shouts, but not necessary to complete the quest.

I always end up with at least 20 in the bank before I get to Solstheim so Miraak is never an issue for me.
