I'm sure most if not all members have become Thane for other holds, what was the 2nd Hold you've become thane for? Technically other than Whiterun, this would actually be the first Thane...man... ship... you actually made for yourself other than just about automatically given. I like to think that it's more important PERSONALLY even though the one in Whiterun is given as part of the main storyline. I became Thane of Windhelm first since I helped the most people there and was siding with the Stormcloaks in that playthrough (even though I wasn't a Nord) and wanted an extra house to put things in and sleep safely. Then it was Markarth and then Solitude. What about you, fellow members, where have you become Thane for the first time with actual effort and out of your way of the main story as opposed to the auto Whiterun Thanemanship?

boop.
I was never too concerned with thaneship until Hearthfire came out, because I wanted a plot of land and all. So the only hold I went out of my way to become thane of was the Falkreath Hold, since I wanted Lakeview Manor.

I wanted to join the thieves guild so i think it was probably Riften, i did a lot of favours there because i wanted Honeyside. I did it before the Civil War as i didn't want the Thane to change midway.

I am in Thane in 7 of the nine holds, the other two I have bounties in. The second city I ever became thane of though was Windhelm.

I was traveling up to Solitude and caught up with the whole vampire business in Morthal and became thane there.

I remember being conferred the title of Thane for the first time over at Markarth. Worked hard to hunt down Forsworn and did some small delivery side quests on the side. Markarth is a haven for mercs.

Hmm... Falkreath or Haafingar, can't remember which.

When I first started playing, it took me quite some time to even find out about the possibility of becoming Thane. I had been doing the MQ, but never thought Thaneship was something available in all Holds.
Or, it may be that I didn't really understand everything Balgruuf said. Especially since being named Thane doesn't make any difference, apart from getting a random weapon and (formerly only in major city Holds) a Housecarl. I rarely commit crimes, so I haven't seen "I'm the Jarl's Thane!" option all that often -- not that I'd ever use it, anyway.

I've yet to become Thane of the Reach, because those Forsworn are such a pain to fight, even on higher levels. I've never even bought Vlindrel Hall.
Maybe someday.

EDIT: In regards to Twiffle's above post, I've done the same thing a few times. With Hearthfire.
A letter from a Jarl can hardly be ignored ( :p ), and it's best to help the people of Falkreath before a dragon attack kills half of them. -.-

Until Hearthfire came out I always went for Solitude as my 2nd title of Thane, but now I favor going after the title in Falkreath.

How do you backstab a Dragon?
Markath. Of course I'm Thane in all 9 holds now (even had to "rethane" (that's not a word, is it) when the civil war was over). Own homes (or built homes) in all of them too.

As to you with the bounties. Just pay 'em dudes. And stop committing crimes (or at least getting caught at them). It never hurts to have friends in high places. Besides, the weenies only make you pay and then apparently forget about it. Worst one I ever had to pay was 9K (I killed bunch of guards by accident) - now they don't even seem to remember. :)

In my experience, you do a bunch of things for community members and then go talk to the Jarl (he or she usually requires you to purchase property as well and do a certain number of services for his people - usually it's 3 but on some it's 5). I just do the little services first and then go talk to the thane (they offer you the option to purchase property) and then, after you've done so the position will be offered. :)
