Maybe 15 minutes? Depending on how many bandits/dragons etc. you run into, or if you get easily sidetracked. I made an oath not to fast travel and that was a trip I dreaded, but it wasn't too bad.

Depends, on horseback it's not so bad, on foot.....15 to 30 minutes. If you stick to the roads it will take longer than open country, but you never know what you may run across in the wild. Sounds like it's time for an adventure.

ive been wanting to travel from markarth to riften and discover everything that's on the way. the only thing that was holding me back was how long it would take

To discover everything along the way would easily reach into the hours area. I would think.

I decided to travel to as many places as I could so I had the option to fast track if I wanted.

Took a while but the sights were something! When you go from bright sunshine and green grass to white snow then back to green pastures it is fantastic. Scary at night tho. I tend to sleep at night and travel by day.

I love travelling around the forests, emerging just as there is a transition in the day - from night to dawn or evening to sunset - I really can evoke some very realistic and humbling emotions.

I almost always walk to any destination because of this. Fast travelling just makes me feel like I'm missing out on something.

It's not that bad (oh no, I'm quoting Imperials), even if you're on foot. Of course, it depends on what route you choose. If you decide to travel via Windhelm, it's obviously going to take longer than if you went through Falkreath Hold or followed the "Riften" signposts on the road from Whiterun.
In any case, the sights and random encounters will make sure your trip won't be boring.

I've entirely stopped using fast-travel, with few exceptions. "Season Unending" would be a pain not to fast-travel, as would a "Rescue Mission" where an NPC has been kidnapped to the opposite side of the province... or to Solstheim.
"Slow-traveling" is definitely much more enjoyable -- except from Riverwood to Solitude via Rorikstead (during "Diplomatic Immunity") if Alduin's working his magic. There are three mounds along that road, IIRC. -.-

Not quite the answer, I timed Windhelm to Riften at 20 minutes. This was running, ignoring all side issues except fighting when attacked. This translated to about six hours in game time. Using this as a guide, you can probably use the map to estimate the time to get from Riften to Markath
