You can also do it alot easier (and lighter on your carry weight) with poisons, easiest one to make mass quantities of is slow poison, takes a river Betty and a salt pile...you can grab em while gathering the fish groups from ivarstead east to Riften for your fortify restoration potions, also the histcarp and silverside perch combine for a damage stamina/fortify stamina potion that you can make a huge % bonus on and sell for alot...one potion sold to a general store should cover your speech skill to 50, then you get the "sell any item to any vendor" perk n call it good lol

Jewelry is great but you have to sit there transmuting iron to silver and then to gold. If your character doesn't do enchanting...
Enchanting has nothing to do with the process of leveling Smithing Skill by forging Jewelry. You only enchant jewelry if you want to level Enchanting skill. You get a wide profit margin regardless of whether you enchant the jewelry or not.

Iron ore is readily available and cheap as well. Every blacksmith and general goods trader stocks it and it's the most abundant ore in Skyrim. The bottom line is that you have to forge 1,857 leather bracers to level Smithing Skill from 15 to 100. You have to forge 1,227 gold rings but since you forge 2 every turn at the forge it's effectively only 614 times. That's not counting the intermittent number of times you'll forge jewelery with gemstones for significantly greater gains in Smithing xp.

That doesn't mean that forging leather bracers isn't a good way to level Smithing skill but it does indicate how much you are missing out in leveling gains if you forgo forging jewelry at every opportunity you get.

Absolutely agree Dagmar. As usual, you're right on the ball.

Smithing & enchanting really do not have a direct relationship (except of course for enchanting what you smith and using enchantments to up you smithing skills - along with potions).

I find that, when I'm not creating specialized stuff for myself (ebony, daedric, dragon bone) which, of course helps, smithing jewelry is the fastest way for me to up my points. I usually mine my own gold and make my own ingots, but I have so many gems that I can use (especially "perfect" diamonds) that I can point up almost every time I create one so I do create a lot. They're also great to enchant as their value is high and they hold great stuff and are easy to switch on the fly.

After the new update i find the best way to power level smithing is by getting your hands on the transmute spell then create a bunch of gold rings. If possible stick the random gems that you find into the rings to make them worth exponentially more.

Edit: whoops read the whole thread and realized this has already been said.

What is it with everybody "transmutting metal". What are ya, lazy? Just mine some gold, smelt it to ingots and use 'em. Come on people! Admittedly it'll up your magic, but, what's the point if you don't even use it regularly? All that smelting and forging ups your dern smithing pretty quick too ya know!

Imho, whatever you have the materials to make is what's best to smith. Idrc what, just make something.

Haha, the topic has snowballed a bit hasn't it? :D

With the Resto. Glitch, I choose not to use it. I have nothing against those who do, but I just choose not to. For mines, in The Reach is a gold mine and two silver mines. The gold mine has enough for nearly thirty ingots ( ), while the silver mine have around sixteen ingots worth between the two of them.

Perkless in Skyrim

Bad to the Dragonbone.
I remember when iron daggers were considered the "best" thing to smith.
They still should be. The 1.5 patch which nerfed Smithing still sticks in my throat. My argument is that practice makes perfect. Crafting 100 iron daggers should be just as effective at improving your skill as crafting 100 ebony daggers. It only really affected people that like to power level Smithing and I suspect they weren't the ones complaining that leveling Smithing was too easy.

Jewelry is great but you have to sit there transmuting iron to silver and then to gold. If your character doesn't do enchanting or perk in alteration that becomes rather tedious.

Leather is readily available and cheap. I just buy out the smiths in every town I visit. I believe it takes about 800 leather to level smithing to 100. Most smiths stock 15 leather + 20 strips, so that's roughly 50 shopping tips, which you should be able to do while questing.

Grab all your ore. Tag the atronach stone. Fast travel to Kilkreath Temple. Stand in Merida's light beam. Spam transmute ore to gold and fast healing. Or muffle if you want to level illusion fast. Maybe soul trap if you can find a body. Guardian circle.

Leather bracers are great for XP. But if you've got the level and ebony igot to spare, just smith some daedric armor for you, your follower, or even those maniquines in some houses.

True, but you really do need to make it up to the perk before it's worth a whole lot more. Besides, you need a daedra heart to make daedric and I'm finding them harder to find now than a Hargraven at a comedy club. I shoulda kept the ones I had at lower levels, but I had no idea I was going to need them. You can also just make ebony armor. It's nearly as pricey.

You can find daedra hearts at The Shrine of Mehrunes Dagon. You start the Museum quest in Dawnstar and just finish his quest. He takes you to the shrine once you've done all he asks. Kill him or leave him be and then Demora will come out after you have killed him. Each demora should have one daedra heart. Two inside, two outside. You can just keep going there after about a month game time.

I've been holding off on that quest, although it's on my list. I guess I'll do it next then.
