I'm the thane of white run. So is that why the carrier won't give me the paper for it? Or how do I adopt a kid

I doubt it. I'm a thane in almost all the holds on one of my best characters and I adopted. Just go to the orphanage in Riften and ask about adoption. That or you could try finding the orphan kids in the major holds and ask them if they'd like to stay with you. Make sure you have the appropriate beds ( children's beds ).

What house do you want?

The Thane of Whiterun gets Breezehome. No carrier is needed. Talk to the bald headed steward of Whiterun if you want to buy Breezehome. The first carrier that comes to you (at 8th level) is from the Jarl of Falkreath to purchase a plot of land by a lake. You need to be the Thane of Falkreath first.

To adopt, you need a home.

OK, I'm assuming you have the Hearthfire DLC, right? You need that to adopt.

To adopt you need to have a house with a children's bedroom (two beds for the kids plus a chest) so if you own Breezehome you have to go to the steward and buy the furnishing for a children's bedroom specifically (it will end up replacing the alchemy room).

You cannot adopt from Honorhall orphanage in Riften if Grelod the Kind, who's in charge there, is still alive. You will need to kill her and talk to the Aretino kid in Windhelm to complete the Dark Brotherhood quest Innonece Lost. You can talk to the Arentino kid either before killing Grelod (then return to him) or just go kill her and then go talk to him. (Know that this will start the Dark Brotherhood Questline.) Killing grelod is pretty easy--she has 1 hit point so you can just punch her and she dies and although everyone panics, no guards will come after you. Once you kill Grelod, talk to the Aretino kid and the quest Innocence Lost is completed, you will get a courier letter in a few days asking to adopt from the orphanage. Then you can go to the orphanage and adopt one or two of the kids.

There are 4 orphans that you can adopt without killing Grelod, if you dont want to start the Dark Brotherhood questline: Lucia in Whiterun, Sofie in Windhelm, Aleson in Dawnstar and Blaise in Solitude (at the stables). Once you have a home with a children's bedroom, talk to any of these kids, ask them to tell you about themselves, and in that dialgoue you will get the option to offer to adopt them. They will go "Do you really mean it?" and which time you can say yes or back out. If you say yes, they will go get their things and when you go home the next time they'll be there.

You can adopt up to two kids.

All of the houses that you buy in the cities have the option to add a children's room (it will replce either the enchanting or alchemy room, except for Solitude where it's an additional new room). With the Heartfire houses, you simply can build the Main Hall and complete all the upstairs bedroom furnishing, or add the bedroom wing, and then you can let kids move in.

Hope this helps.

Have you done the quest "Innocence Lost"? It is required to adopt children from the orphanage, a courier should give you a note that Constance is now in charge of the orphanage.

You do not need the note to adopt, however. You can adopt orphans from various cities without even needing to talk to Constance
Windhelm- Sofie
Dawnstar- Alesan
Solitude(Katla's Farm)- Blaise
Whiterun- Lucia

To adopt ANY child, you need a furnished house with a child's room. Hope this helps :D

How do you backstab a Dragon?
OK. What's with all the adoption and marriage stuff on these forums. Is there some significant advantage to it? I was married once, killed her and haven't looked back.

I can't imaging ever wanting to marry again or adopt. It just seems like more victims for my enemies to kill or to get killed by some wild animal or Dragon.

Can someone explain the appeal (and please don't say RPG opportunities). If there is a quantifiable advantage I would like to know.

In it for the profit - Daelon

Marriage is worth it early game as an income stream if nothing else. 100 gold per day iirc. Also your spouse is a shop which helps a bit with the offloading of stuff. Then there is the lovers comfort which is a 15% increase in skill improvement for 8 hours after sleeping with the spouse as opposed to the usual 10% for using your own bed.

So yeah worth doing.

On the other hand the adopted kids are a pain in the ass IMO. I eventually dumped mine in a house I never visit.

I did marry really early on (but as I said, her nagging made me kill her) and you're right, early on (I think it was 250 for me) the cash flow was nice.

I won't get married again though. If I can't keep my Carls from having snotty attitudes... Oh wait! I could marry that snotty elf from Solitude (you know the one that sells dumb clothes to rich people). Hey, at least if they're going to be snotty anyhow, they may as well be REALLY! snotty. :)

No kids for me though. Somehow I think an indescriminate killer for profit is not the best roll model!

Marriage is awesome. Especially since most of the men in Skyrim are my type!

I've only been adopting with one of my characters for a few days so far, and the kids are pretty annoying. But they do manage to scrounge up some useful items, like ore and rare ingredients.

Hmmm... there's a thought. I have a good dozen places where I mine gold & silver (and even more for iron and other misc ores). Maybe I could put kids to work.

No child labor laws in Syrim! They gotta earn their keep!

Can you get that bonus with a follower who is also your wife like Mjoll (she can be both). You can explore Skyrim together, have sexy time with Mjoll in a rented bed and get the lover's comfort bonus.

I don't know. I guess you may be able to, but I think you need to own the bed and be "lovers". You wouldn't get her monthly income though. That was a big help at the begginning.

If the bedrooms are furnished you should be able to move them in by talking to the mrs.
Skyrim guy: Why on earth did you marry that B****. She gets on my nerves, "I will bear your burdens"... yeah right ya snarky ************* (so & so). Can't wait to sacrifice you to Bothia! (she's probably one of those non killable ones though).

I often marry Mjoll. Why? Well she's good in a fight but the main thing about her is, she wants to destroy the thieves guild. That part of the game was never completed, but I still want her out of the way... Like being my wife and steward of Lakeview Manor, far from Riften. And mother of six kids. I keep her busy and she never gets in my way. Then I take Jenassa adventuring. Yes, I know I'm a right bastard.
