What happened to that guy?

There used to be a guy who would randomly challenge you to a fight inside cities and just start attacking you. I think he was called Challenger or Fighter or something very generic like that. I always ran into him in Whiterun, by the guards' barracks. I don't know if he would spawn in any other cities, but my old, now quite outdated Skyrim game guide makes a refernce to him as one of teh various random encounters you'll chance upon in cities, along with kids asking you to play tag and such. I just realized I haven't encountered him for the last several games of mine. Did one of the patches deactivate him?

Anyone remember this guy? What happened to him?

if i think its who your on about, he says ''call yourself a wizard,'' then challenges you, if so i think its when you get to a certain level in either illusion or conjuration, , but i do agree i havnt seen him since the 1.9 patch.

I can't recall ever seeing him in any of my games. Sounds interesting though.

he looked almost like a tramp, but used alteration and strong with destruction too, , a real tough fught, and in cities he could get you into trouble with guards etc if a sword or spell went off target.

I believe I've run into him in Winterhold and I'm almost certain I was on the 1.9 patch when it happened. What kinda sucks is you only run into him once. Unless I'm mistaken, of course. I've only ever run into him once with any given character but it's a random encounter so it's possible it could happen again I guess.

One encounter I'd like to see happen more than once is the hired thugs that get sent to teach you a lesson if you get sticky fingers with someone else's stuff. Not only that, but maybe a game tweak that takes into consideration whether the person that sends them is DEAD before I take anything.

I haven't seen him for much longer than patch 1.9 has been out. I don't recall him using any magic, although maybe that was a variation of this random encounter. I only recall him using weapons and never having any good loot. He was kind of annoying because you couldn't not fight him and everyone except your follower would just stand by and do nothing.

I want to say that my last character who encountered him was my Breton Saozig a' Dhubh and I started her around June of last year. I don't remember any of my characters after that encountering him.

First time I encountered him was in Markarth, and Ghorza got in the way and ended up at the wrong end of his lighting bolt (was funny when her assistant took over the shop!)

I've also encountered him in Whiterun - he'd interrupt me while I was using Adrianne's workbench.

I remember he was a speedy little f#cker. He'd hit me with ice spells, slowing me down, while running off and continuing to belt me, and usually the guards or my follower would cut him down before I even got a chance to hit him.

I also once met a mage in Winterhold (town part) who asked me to help him with a warding lesson, so it was kind of a friendly match, and I've met a boy in Whiterun who asked me to turn myself invisible (I've never actually found an invisibility spell) I think it might have been the same kid who gets bullied by the little girl.

The only Encounter I've run into like that was someone demanding a Mage's Duel, and only on magic using characters who are also members of the College of Winterhold. Similar to the Hired Thugs, and random Assassin attacks on the road, there are triggering events that add them to the Encounter lists in the Creation Kit. I haven't seen him in a while, but it was never a common experience. I believe your earlier running into him may be a Statistical Anomaly. The Random Number Generation Algorythms sometimes cranks out Streaks, like the Power, or Critical Shot Perks proccing 4-6 times in a row. It happens. I am unaware of any Patch for that event, but often changes to such a complex system has unforseen consequences, like pushing Encounters down on the stack with additions, particularly if you have Mods that affect those lists. I've seen similar losses of frequency in the Radiant Leveled Loot lists (Mostly Rares, like Nightshades on Mage Corpses) after Patches, updates, and the like. There's just too many factors to say with any surety.

I've had the duel and some 'student' asking me about wards so he can see how it works. So he attacks you when you throw up a ward, then thanks you or something.

I don't believe the challenger has been removed as I wound up running into him at Lakeview Manor just last night and another time with another character about a couple months back.

I ran into the challenger playing just a few days ago. I found him in Winterhold right after a Quest Turn in for the College of Winterhold.

I'm am almost certain that it's an encounter linked to the College Questline. I distinctly remember seeing him the first time and wishing I had a Dialoge Option for him to say "Ugh, I'm not a wizard... I just turned in a Quest to the College, go away"
