I used to be more into it back when I was a bit younger. For the most part, I've kind of grown into other musical tastes but still occasionally listen to it once in awhile.

I don't figure there's ever a sort of personal limit on what sort of age you'd need to enjoy it, heck my grandfather is the spitting image of a stereotypical biker and of course he listens to heavy metal. He has always had hearing problems and claims that other forms of music "aren't loud enough" for him lol.

Myself, I've just grown into different musical tastes and these days the closest genre of music I listen to remains industrial and Skinny Puppy is definitely still my favorite group.

Am I a fan? Hell I used to be in a band. lol
Though my band years are behind me, not much behind me, I still can't help but listen to the occasion Metal core or Death core song. The cores get confusing and if you go too far down the line you get Black metal. But all in all I still love my Asking Alexandria, White Chapel, and The Devil Wears Prada, but I'm more into my Electronica and 90's rock/punk.
Daft punk are the leaders of all known time and space.
As for hearing? It's not my greatest sense. Drumming, Drag racing, and loud music have whittled it down a lot and I'm starting to notice. That constant ringing of the ears? That stuff isn't that bad you get used to it after a while. :p

Huge metal fan. Especially black metal.

Favourite bands (to name a few!)

Dark Funeral
Darkthrone
Iron Maiden
Dismember
Pantera
Slayer
Carpathian Forest
Burzum
Mayhem

ETC!!

Going to see Slayer twice in 2 days this year. I cannot wait for it. The only European date where 2 venue dates have been booked :) So excited!

Seeing Lordi and Suffocation as well next month.

It's brilliant.

There's a huge metal music following in Ireland and 90% of my friends listen to it.

I find it easier to get on with someone if you have the same interests like music :)
