After getting arrested for stealing, I make my way to the general goods store of Whiterun to make another attempt. On the way there, I noticed there was a random ash pile in front of the food stand. I went to loot it and noticed that there were several odd items in it that looked like they would belong to Ulfberth, the blacksmith of whiterun. The ash pile contained keys to his house, his armor, and his weapon. I snuck into their house and saw that only his wife was there. Ulfberth was no where to be found. Anyone have any clue on what happened?

you can resurrect him if that's the problem

type: "prid <ulfberth id>"
then "resurrect"
if he didn't show up type "enable"

I had a similar problem with durnehviir, i found him dead in the middle of riften, leaved the blue palace and BAM, dead durnehviir

Ash piles usually occur when a mage is killed (or when someone is killed by a mage) not sure which. But he's definitely dead. If he's important or you need him for quests then re-load.

She can't use commands because she's on a console...

Thank you for clearing that up. I'm unsure if he's an important character but I'm going to guess not since he can die. I can't recall any mages being in Whiterun besides the one that serves the Jarl but you're right, thinking back to previous encounters with mages I remember there being ash piles where they had killed someone. Thanks again!

Check the Wiki page for info on him because people needed for quests can die :)

I remember doing a companions quest and the pointer was just hovering above the ground where the person should have been... I killed him a while back by accident and didn't think he would come in useful lol. Learned since :)

Did a dragon enter Whiterun at some point? Maybe he came to Whiterun and was killed, but then resurrected by a mage.

If you have dawnguard it's possible he was killed by the random vampire encounters that happen in cities.
