For me its got to be Whiterun. The city just feels so warm and friendly, also I love the layout of the city with its three districts. Windhelm would be a close second with its gothic architecture and then Solitude and its medievil buildings.

Riverwood. It's scenic and it's... the start of Dovahkiin's journey. Poetic, really. And I quite like the atmosphere.

But, hold capital wise?
Appearance: Markarth. Beautiful, beautiful city.
Atmosphere: Whiterun.
Atmosphere runner-up: Solitude.

Despite the distasteful and rather annoyingly racist Nords in Windhelm, that would be my choice. The house is close to all the merchants and smith so it's not a pain going back and forth. There is a decent level of storage and I love the displays for my weapons. I always side with the imperials, so it makes the annoying close minded Nords more bearable. Plus if a dragon so happens to attack and I "accidentally" fail to protect a few of said members of society so be it. Whiterun would be my second choice due to everything, although very useful, so far away is rather annoying. Plus I swear if I have to live in a city where I hear the same guy chanting about Talos endlessly when I need to use the Enchanter in Dragonsreach I'll go mad.

Markarth! It's big, has waterfalls, and was made by dwarfs! What more could you ask for?

I voted Falkreath? The reason? It's my favorite city you can just walk into and get quests without loading screen after loading screen. Plus, it's by the DB sanctuary and I like the Ill Met by Moonlight quest.

It's a tie between Whiterun and Solitude.

Whiterun is the town I visited first, and am most familiar with. It has really grown on me. :)
Also, it's home to the Companions.

Solitude is easily the prettiest of the main towns, and for some reason feels very peaceful and safe. (Possibly because it's the main Imperial town in Skyrim.)
I recently purchased Proudspire Manor, and intend to move there from Breezehome.

I love how much Solitude has to offer in terms of a great blacksmith, wealthy general store, scenery is BEAUTIFUL, and I adore all the cobblestone and castles kind of theme.

However, I love how simple and sophisticated Whiterun is. It's got everything you need, it's right in the middle of Skyrim, it's got lots of quests to do and it's such an attractive city, full of diverse people. I just love how easy it is to navigate; there's not ten billion streets and homes, it's just a few main stretches and the layout is perfect.

It's a tie between those two :3

I have to go with Markarth. I remember the first time I visited it my jaw dropped. I absolutely love the Dwarven architecture. And the fact that waterfalls were included in the city really gives it a beautiful look. And I love the different levels to the city, its not all just on a flat land which adds to the scenery.

For me, Markarth, closely followed by Solitude. The former, because Dwarven architecture is just epic. The latter, because I'm always reminded of a Holy Roman Empire-era (around the time of Charlemagne) city whenever I'm there.

I'm surprised Whiterun has so many votes. Personally, I find it pretty boring. Even with mods that were supposedly meant to improve it.

My vote would go to Markarth. I like all the stone architecture and how high up it goes.

Essentially I like to go by what city is most useful. Most useful would more than likely be a tie between WhiteRun and Solitude. Purely for the close range of shops and the variety of them. If you're going by looks, Solitude defiantly blows Whiterun in the water. It's bigger, has nicer stone, at night it's more nice and even the out skirts of the city is more well put together. It also has docks directly below the city. So to me it's Solitude. Which one I spent the most time in? Whiterun. Easiest place to boost smithing in my personal opinion.

I used to think whiterun, maybe because it was the first place i ended up, but I've since gone sound the north around to the south east and paid a visit to riften. Looking to spend a week there and do some activities- can't afford the house there yet! Saving for the whiterun one!

Falkreath because of the setting the land surrounding it is beautiful.

In addition to my earlier post: Whiterun has a huge con called Heimskr. That man is so devoted to Talos that he's up and preaching literally in the middle of the night. And I have to pass him every time I go to Jorrvaskr (which is very often). >.<
I'd have killed him ages ago if my character didn't have a kill-only-hostiles policy.

I love watching the goat in the middle of Falkreath. I once sat there several game hours (it was night, and I needed to see someone). :D

I quite like Falkreath, especially if I'm playing a Bosmer character. I wish Winterhold was bigger, just a few more characters and things to do it would probably be my favourite, it would have been awesome to build a house there.
