Is Alchemy really that useful?

Pure mages are fun! And annoying, without alchemy at least I've found. It's relatively easy to find, and but ingredients, and while potions can be found or bought, you have a wider arrange of options to call upon if you choose to craft them yourself. Also you can generally get more powerful ones.
