Where to sell high value items

Hello all,

Loving the game so far! Very challenging at the moment being new and only being level 4 but that's not the purpose of my thread.

Along the way in one of my quests rescuing some dude I have acquired two overalls each worth 420 gold. Problem I have is the stores I have tried to sell in only offer 140 or something stupid! Not only that a gold necklace I obtained is valued at 120 and they offer 45 :-) laughable!

So where do we go to get the big bucks for our goods?

The trader in Riverwood has a plops load of money if you invest in his shop. You need to level up speech to get your barter up to start getting good prices for goods you sell.

while this is the way to go later on in the game, it is not really helpful to my man who just started the game. best place for you to visit is Whiterun, i can think of a buyer for most everything there. The smith, the shopkeep FOR the smith, the bow and arrow guy, the cocky know it all Belethor, the alchemist, Mr. Grey-Mane, and the dumb dude in Dragonsreach with his magical spells and what not.... let us know if you figure it out! have fun !

also, do and in game ''wait'' for 48 hours and they get more money and different wares...

Oh damm very true I missed he was only level 4 my bad, yeah you can visit any trader really. It's best to focus on combat and armour skills early on leave the speech tree till later on.

You won't get paid really good prices , anywhere, until you level speech. I usually hang onto high value items for as long as possible in order to get the highest amount of gold for them.

The best vendors, are fences within the thieves guild, different people become available after the completion of certain quests.
Eventually they each have 4000 gold available for you to sell things to them. That is without any speech perks.
Also when you pick an item up you see it's true value, when you sell to a shop they will buy it for significantly less than the value likewise when you buy from a shop your paying above the normal value. The only way to effect how much you get from buying or selling is improving your speech skill, getting speech perks or enchanted gear with better prices/speechcraft.

What you see when you look at an item in your inventory is the retail value of that item. Merchants can't pay you that, or they'd make no profit. They have to give you the wholesale price. As you get better at speech, wear barter fortifying enchantments, or drink barter fortifying potions, the merchants will tolerate a lower markup.

TITCR. The selling price is specific to you not the purchaser.

To elaborate, when you sell an item the selling price is the value of the item (the price you see when you look at an item in your inventory) divided by a modifier based on your Speech Skill, Haggling perks, Allure perk (for purchaser of the opposite gender) and any Fortify Barter effects you might have running on your character from enchanted gear, potions and the Blessing of Zenithar. The more of these you have the closer the selling price will be to the value of the item. According to the UESP article on Speech there's a hard cap on the selling price of 95% of the value of the item.

anyone else miss hitting the ''haggle price'' option in from Morrowind? where you could try and up the price of wares based on how well the merchant liked you?

I think everyone has hit upon the basics - the price you are offered will be reflective of your speech skill so level that as much as you can - before you trade try sleeping (well rested bonus will tack on 10% skill increase) also hit a shrine of dibella (10% speech increase) or if you prefer the shrine of zenithar for 10% better prices. The lower levels is just grunt work - grin and bare it in no time you'll have more than you can spend.

The primary way to level Speech is to sell and buy things. The amount of skill xp scales based on the value of the transaction. The other way is to successfully persuade or intimidate people when talking to them.

buy and sell things one at a time... one of my favorite ways it to buy ingredients from the alchemy shops... they usually have low amounts of a lot of them, and then you can turn around and make potions out of them, sell the potions for your money back, and still have enough left over to hit the next alchemy shop and start again... give it a try, your alchemy and speech will level up fast, as well as your gold..

No one is going to ever give you something face value for anything. What you want to do is get your speechcraft skill up and take bartering perks, then you'll start getting better prices. These perks are the only ones I take on every single character.

thanks for the reply, are there books to read to know how to make potions?

I was looking to buy the official strategy guide to give me a better idea for a lot of this stuff but not getting it till the end of the month!

There are recipes in game, but they're on slips of paper, not usually in books. They are most often found on witches, hag, and necromancers.

You can also buy alchemy recipes at most alchemy shops.

Otherwise, out of game, just about anything you need to know is available online if you just search for it.

You can speak with the bloke at the Bard's college that wears the funny hat he trains speech. It's one of the only trainers I actually use as leveling speech can be a right pain in the arse.

I find that speech levels itself at a perfectly acceptable rate if you always choose the persuade option in dialogue, when it's available, and buy and sell a lot of stuff.

It's not like restoration. Restoration is a bugger to level.
