Mathias tilted his head slightly towards the elf wich seemingly joined him just at the edge of camp, he noticed the readied arrow in the bosmer's bow, good, he had survival Instincts, he would need them when they moved into Skyrim. "I have been around, just having scouted from a birds eye view" he said back in a greeting of his own and smirked lighty at what he guessed was a compliment, "you have to be, in my line of work, what sort of hunter would I be if the pray notices me before I can strike?" he answered with a small shrug of his shoulders and turned fully towards him. The Grimm gave a light chuckle at the female Altmer's coment and shook his head slightly in amusment, he might like these two. "The Grimm" he suddenly introduced himself shortly, if he was going to work with a bunch of mercs and cutthroats then they should at least all know eachothers names, even only to know wich ones they would hunt down when this was all done or if one of them turned coat and betrays the group.

"It is a pleasure to meet you." Caleb said with genuine warmth. Warmth that faded from his face when he recognized the approaching man as the imperial battle mage. Before he could demand the imperial state his business, he extended his hand, not towards Caleb, and not in an attack. He held a healthy looking red apple out towards Lillianna, and waited patiently for her to take it. "You have our thanks. Join us, if you'd like." Every fibre of his being protested those words, and it showed in his suddenly stiffened posture. But his former wife would not have wanted him to judge someone solely on their uniform. It was hard, however. He'd spent the last several years avoiding imperials and certainly not helping them. Now he traveled with a group of them, as a healer for a company of mercenaries. His thoughts were interrupted by an altmer woman, wearing unique red armor, that reflected the firelight. "May I join you?" Before he could properly answer, a khajiit approached and struck up a conversation. The group around the fire was slowly growing, with the one-horned argonian and white-handed dark elf also joining them. "The fires' warmth is open to anyone who wishes to share it." He ended up saying, though he couldn't quite make eye contact with the young imperial as he did.

Djorn watched the gathering from afar, running his whetstone down Wolftooths' length. The blade was already keen, but the ranger knew who important it was to keep his weapons in good shape. Especially in a place like Skyrim, which had been hard before the war, and was now down to survival of the fittest. Outside of the main holds, anyways. He finished with the stone and replaced it in a belt pouch. Examining his loyal blade with an experienced eye, he checked for scratches or nicks in the metal. Finding none, he sheathed the sword, and moved onto his axe. He repeated the sharpening and inspection, before setting the weapon down beside him. It would be cold, tonight, and he knew from experience the cold could cause blades to stick in their scabbards. A weapon you couldn't use, was like having no weapon at all. Done with his nightly ritual, he sat back, enjoying the solitude, and lit his pipe, puffing small smoke clouds into the air.

Thalien smirked at the imperials response. He had quite a way with words, he had to admit. Of course, that didn't mean he could be trusted and the way Vintor had looked at him meant there was probably more to the man than met the eye. But there was a ring of truth to his words. Like Thalien, he was looking out for himself first and foremost, something he could appreciate. His brows shot up at the sudden formality to the imperial. "You speak to me as if I'm noble lord. Let me assure you; I am not. Follow me if you wish, but don't pretend it's out of loyalty. As you said yourself, we all must look out for ourselves. Fight with me, but I don't need a body guard." He extended his hand to the man, "I am Thalien." A quick glance revealed that almost all of the group had crowded around the fire. That was good. If they could refrain from stabbing each other in the back, they might just be able to fight as a unit long enough to survive the job.

"Here. It's not much, I know, but better than nothing." The imperial battlemage handed her a ripe apple, gleaming in the firelight. She took the opportunity to get a good luck at him. She'd lived in the empire all her life, but she'd never seen any soldiers. Not up close, anyways. The man was handsome, with darker skin, hinting that he'd come from the south, Leyawiin or Bravil, maybe. "Thank you." She said, aware of the tension in both Adalia and Caleb. And she could feel the fear. It wasn't much- they didn't imminently fear for their lives or anything, but it was definitely there; a steady trickle of fear that fed into the void located somewhere in Lillianas' breast. "Yes...thank you. Please, sit." Adalia said, a thin smile on her lips. She didn't trust the mage, far from it, but he was willing to share with the girl under her protection, and that meant something to her.

    Thesius

    The Imperial Paladin
The tall, breton vampires motives seemed simple enough, and looking at him, Vintor was inclined to believe him. But that didn't mean the creature could be trusted. At some level, he should have realized that his old life was making him biased against the undead. At another, he knew exactly how dangerous the creatures could be. But he doubted Thalien would approve if he drew his weapon against one or the other, and they might just prove to much for him if they decided to join forces. Before he could take his leave, the breton asked him a question; "And what of you, former man of Arkay? What are your motives?"

    Then

The battle was going poorly. Screams and shouts rang out above the clash of steel on steel and steel cutting flesh. The city of Anvil could be seen in the distance, for all the good it did Vintor and his companions. His rapidly thinning group of companions- mercenaries and rebels. After weeks of raids and ambushes against imperial patrols, the empire had finally reacted. Several cohorts of imperial legionnaires, preceded by a horde of penitent, had attacked the raiders just outside their camp. VIntor himself was wounded, blood trickling from several rents in his armour. Still, the imperials came on. Vintors' mace crushed the skull of one, and swept a second off his feet, but the third man plunged a spear into his chest, slipping past the plate armour there.

With a cry equal parts rage and pain, the former paladin fell. The spear man stood over him, bloody weapon poised to strike. The imperial never saw the deathblow coming, delivered by a sword of midnight black. A scarred man in dark armour, accompanied by a hooded and cloaked halberd wielder, who kept a pack of slavering penitent at bay with masterful strokes of his weapon. The swordsman reached down to him, offering his hand. "On your feet, priest. You're not dead yet."

    ***

Vintor shook his head. "I owe our leader a great debt. My service is his, so long as he requires it." That wasn't quite the whole truth, but the vampire was still a threat and a stranger.

"Hello there" a voice breathed in her ear, and something brushed against the back of her legs. Elwyn turned surprised at the closeness of the voice. A khajiit, the woman she'd noticed earlier, but hadn't yet spoken to. Her fur was a midnight black, lighter at her throat, but otherwise she almost blended with the night. "You seemed lonely. Perhaps you would care to share a tale or two?" There was a hint in the other womans' voice that she was interested in more than just a tale. Elwyn felt a smile tug at her lips. Usually, she wasn't interested in khajiit, but this one was particularly good looking. "Well," she said coyly, "I suppose that depends what kind of tales you're interested in." She nodded towards the fire. "Come join me, and perhaps we can...exchange stories."

Orien heard the nord mans' invitation, but he also heard the hesitation in his voice. Clearly, the man did not like imperials. Or more specificially, he did not like the legion. That was not surprising; after all, almost the entirety of the mercenary group was made up of anti imperial individuals. While Orien could respect their viewpoints, it did not mean he would bow to them. He was still a member of the fifth legion, and after his vow, there was no way he would back down from that. He managed a polite nod to the robed nord, and noticed Elrasur had also joined the group around the fire.

Unbuckling his sword as a token of good faith, the young mage nodded towards the girl he'd given the apple to. "Forgive me for intruding, but I think I recognize your accent; the imperial city, yes?" He smiled in an attempt at comraderie. "It's been a long time since I visisted the capital, and even then I was just a boy, accompanying my father when he went for an audience with the archon of the city." Orien hadn't actually been allowed inside the chamber where his father had had his audience, but he remembered the joyful expression as the man had left the room, a shining medallion for bravery and service around his neck.

Athara smirked at the elves eager attitude. She stepped closer to the her and in her most sultry tone, she asked, "so what brings a creature like you all the way out here? Not many elves around these parts and even less that look quite so...stunning." She glanced past the altmer to the others, keeping an eye on them. She wasn't ashamed of her blatant flirting, but she didn't want to be interrupted, either. Most were sitting around the fire, talking, getting acquainted with one another. A few others sat a short distance away, and one or two stood apart from the group in their own private conversations. All in all, it seemed like people were gathering their strength for the march into Skyrim the next day.

Iornath nodded and lowered his bow, placing the arrow back in its' quiver. The Grimm, as he introduced himself as , could be useful, with his ability to transform into a bird. Very few people suspected such a creature of being something other than what it appeared to be. He heard the words of the altmer woman in the conspicuous coat, but merely shrugged. He could not always be as silent as he would have liked, especially with so many others nearby. "We are allies, for now, at any rate. If that should change, you will learn how silent I can be."

Rajeem leaned forwards and let the fire warm his scales. He had spent some time in Skyrim, but not recently. What he remembered was a dour people and bitter cold in most parts of the realm. It was likely that this was the last time he'd be properly warm for a good while. Making a mental note to grab a cloak as soon as possible, he pulled out a bottle of ale and uncorked it with a soft 'pop'. Taking a swallow, he set it down beside him and asked "so, we all know that we're supposed to be in Falkreath by mid day but then what? From what I've heard the nords aren't very welcoming."

After accepting the apple, Lilliana quickly devoured it, not realizing how hungry she'd been until that moment. The man who'd handed it to her, the imperial in legion armour, said he recognized her accent, and guessed she was from the imperial city. Not a bad guess, and not entirely wrong. Her village had been nearby and it wasn't too unlikely that she had picked up the accent from her fellow scholars in the imperial library. "Not quite" she said "I grew up in a village not far from there. Most of my life was spent in the archives there." Adalia leaned forwards, keeping quiet and extending her hands to the warm flames, thankful the cold was not as piercing as she'd suspected. "What about you? Where do you come from?"

Elrasur sat at the campfire, staring into the flickering reds and oranges, not really paying attention to the other mercenaries and assassins nearby. Skyrim was not a place he had spent much time in, nor was it somewhere he had thought quest for justice would take him back to. Certainly not in the company of a group such as this. But it seemed fate had a sense of humour, and here he was. When he finally looked from the flames up to the darkening sky, he realized at least an hour had passed since he'd sat down with the one-horned argonian. Perhaps more, if the cold that was slowly seeping into his back was any indication. But he was not weary, and so he stood, stepping away from the fires' warmth. "I suggest you all get some rest. The journey north will be tiring and treacherous, not to mention what awaits us when we finally arrive."

He turned and made his way to the edge of the clearing, where the altmer in the pale coat, the masked human, and the bosmer stood in conversation. Approaching the wood elf, he said "I will take the next watch. We will need your ears when we pass into Skyrim." He nodded towards the others. "It would be best if the two of you did the same. If tales from the north are to be believed, Skyrim is not a place for the unprepared."

The khajiit woman smiled coyly at Elwyn, "so what brings a creature like you all the way out here? Not many elves around these and even less that look quite so...stunning." She asked. The words brought a smile to her face, accepting the compliments and the less than subtle intent behind them. "I'm not so sure I should tell you." She said coyly, "a rare creature like myself should keep some secrets, don't you think?" She shivered as the cold began to set into her bones. It was a stark reminder why she'd always avoided traveling this far north, and another reminder that Skyrim would be just as miserable, for the most part. "Will you join me by the fire? I'm not suited to this cold. It bites with an unusual persistence, and I'd rather not catch my death out here so far from good meals and fine comforts."

Her armour was slightly insulated against the cold, true, but it did little to protect her now, with night falling. She looked to the imperial speaking with the man who'd appointed himself their leader. He wore little more in the way of protection against the cold than she did, and yet he wasn't so much as shivering. In fact, his breath wasn't so much as fogging the air. Uneasiness gripped her as her mind whispered all kinds of suggestions to her. Perhaps sensing her stare, the imperial turned and flashed her a smile with canines that seemed much too long...With an effort, she shrugged off the seemingly supernatural uneasiness, and turned her attention back to the alluring khajiit. "So? Will you come with me and share some of the fires' warmth?"

Athara's grin grew at the altmer womans words. The invitation was there and so was an understanding. Of course, she wouldn't have approached the elf if she thought she was stupid. Athara was no chief alchemist, but she wasn't orc-levels of dumb either. Which reminded her...she glanced over to the orc with the warhammer, who was still sitting by himself, muttering. By his armour it looked like he knew his way around a fight, and hinted that it might be better not to draw his attention. "So? Will you come with me and share some of the fires' warmth?" The elf asked again, and Athara placed a hand on the womans' armoured bicep. "Of course. Maybe I can suggest some of those 'fine comforts' while we sit." The dark elf with white hands suggested that everyone get some rest and prepare for the journey ahead before marching off to the edge of the clearing.

Caleb kept a keen eye on the imperial soldier as he joined them at the fire and handed over the apple. Despite the charity, and the man doing nothing that would indicate he was spying for the imperials, the healer couldn't bring himself to trust him. He knew the others wouldn't look kindly on him if he picked fights with the soldier merely for being a soldier, but they didn't know what he knew. The imperials, this one included couldn't be trusted. Their was the girl of course, but something struck him about her as well. Something he couldn't quite put his finger on. She ate the apple as if she was starving, before looking to the soldier. She thanked him and spoke about her upbringing in a small village near the Imperial City. Then she asked about his own past, and Caleb couldn't help but add "yes, soldier of the empire. Tell us of your own past, before you set out on this path of slaughtering the weak and innocent."

The girl took the apple from him and ate it readily enough, something that Orien appreciated. He knew there was little love between these mercenaries and the empire. He could see it in the way the wood elf glared at him, the same way the robed man was doing now. The man wasn't a warrior, apparently, but there was a certain bearing to him that spoke to the soldiers instinct in him. The girls' question brought his attention back to her. She said she was in fact, not from the Imperial City, as he'd assumed.

He opened his mouth to tell her about Leyawiin, and his familys' history of service to the empire, when the robed man spoke up. "yes, soldier of the empire. Tell us of your own past, before you set out on this path of slaughtering the weak and innocent." Orien felt his fists ball, and it took him a moment to resists feeding the fool a bolt of lightning. Or at least knocking some sense into him the old fashioned way. "The empire brings peace and order to Tamriel. It's insurgents who go around burning down villages and killing citizens."

Caleb had to fight to keep a sneer from his face. It wasn't like him to be so confrontational. But at the same time, he couldn't bring himself to sit idly by and allow the man to act as if he wasn't at least partially responsible for the deaths of so many innocents. For years now, he'd thought he had moved past the death of his wife but being in Bruma, seeing this imperial soldier so casually join in with their group...it brought some of the pain flooding back. He knew this imperial wasn't responsible for her death, but he was still an imperial legionnaire. And as he'd just said, he clearly supported the empire. Whether he was willingly blind or simply didn't care, Caleb wasn't sure. "Is that so? Tell that to the children orphaned by imperial purges. Women raped by passing soldiers, and the hanged men who were accused of treason for taking care of their families rather than fighting!" He was nearly shouting now. "You are no more innocent than any of those who committed those atrocities!"

The captain of their company assured him that he was no noble, something that Cyrius had already discerned for himself. He smiled and performed a half serious bow, before accepting and shaking the offered hand. "So be it. A comrade in arms, then. I'll excuse myself." The imperial vampire turned away, towards the fire. He didn't feel the cold as keenly as the others, but it wouldn't hurt to make some allies among the rest of the group. His fellow vampire seemed uninterested in any sort of alliance, but that was fine. Cyrius hadn't gotten as far as he had by relying on others. As he approached the group at the fire, the robed man, who seemed to be an alchemist or healer or sorts, started shouting at the other human, something about the atrocities committed by the empire.

Cyrius had noted some tension between the two, back in the tavern. This was something else though and it looked like the two were on the verge of exchanging blows. With a theatrical huff of exasperation at the pettiness of mortals, he rushed forwards, stopping between the pair of them, hands extended to either man in a calming gesture. "Now, now my fine fellows, let's not do anything rash. The empire has certainly done some...questionable things in the past." He looked to the imperial, "but they also maintain stability. If the method works, why change it?" The argument was not the best he'd ever made in his life, but hopefully he could get through to them. "More importantly, we may be in the employ of the empire, but that does not mean we are imperials. We have only ourselves to look to for help. Fighting now, will do nothing but weaken the company. Settle your grievances after we've completed our task, yes?"

Elwyn started leading the way back to the fire, then stopped. The man she'd briefly spoken to was shouting at the man in imperial robes and armour. Clearly, conflict was moments away. A few moments later, the pale imperial, Cyrius, she thought his name was, rushed over to stand between the two. She turned to the khajiit woman "perhaps rest is a better alternative. We will need our strength for the march into Skyrim, and it is late." She smiled slightly, "there will plenty of nights to come where you can show the 'finer comforts'."

Mathias raised a slightly amused brow under his mask at the small jabbs that the two elves were exchanging, he was about to give his own comment towards the Altmer With the pale leather cloak before the Dumner with the white hands walked towards the trio, Elrasur if he rememebered correctly, the shapeshifting assassin quickly recognized him as the one that cut Down those two thugs and defended the Imperial back at the tavern in the slums, With rather lethal efficacy as well.

"I will take the next watch. We will need your ears when we pass into Skyrim." He told the bosmer before nodded towards Mathias and the Altmer as well. "It would be best if the two of you did the same. If tales from the north are to be believed, Skyrim is not a place for the unprepared." he adviced to them. Mathias nodded in slight gratitude, looking forward to a warm fire, he also had to take his potion soon too, it has been quite a few hours since last and he was starting to get suspicous from how long he has lasted now. "Very well, just give a Call if anything happens" he suggested and nodded towards his fellow merceneries before he made his pay past them and to the fire, where he now realized a small shouting match had started between the robed man and the Imperial soldier. As he walked closer the noble looking Imperial stepped in and tried to calm Things Down With a rather poor defence towards the Legion and their actions. Mathias let a rather obvious snort Escape him as he leaned against a tree that was a few steps away from the fire, crossing his arms over his chest.

"The Empire holds the Balance and Peace by executing anyone that stands against them, not that I complain bacause they make jobs flow in With coin, but I agree that they can be rather ruthless in their Methods even for someone like me. But now is not the time to start a fight, not With all of our heads on the line" he warned them, his tone mocking and sarcastic when he talked about the Peace and balance, his eyes prectically glowing in amusment towards the, in his opinion, childish desplay between the Imperial and robed man whom started the argument.

Just after he spoke he felt the small stap of pain in his chest wich he has become rather acustomed to over the years, he calmly took off his mask and pulled out a small vile that contained the elixir, he had already mixed some flasks With the alcohol that he needed before they set out on this Journey back in Bruma just to make sure. He chugged the small potion Down in one go before he placed the vile back in his robes, eyeing the girl that could somehow sense his pain somehow With a strange look in his eyes, he didn't know how she did it, but it scared him a little, not that he would ever admit it. But just as quickly as the suspicious look was on his face it was replaced by a small amused smirk towards the other People around the fire, he would let the young girl be, for now.

Atharas' ears twitched back at the altmers' words. She was far from irritated at her, but the shouting match between the imperial soldier and the robed man had pretty much killed the mood. She nodded, "a good idea. Get your rest, and I'll have to show you those 'points' some other time." She smiled at the woman, and waited until she'd gone off to set up her bedroll before the smile warped into a snarl. Staring at the two men, who'd now been joined by the shapeshifter and the pale imperial, her eyes narrowed until they were mere slits of amber. The assassin made her way over to the fire, not paying attention to the girl or her redguard guardian. Her ire was entirely focused on the two that had ruined what had promised to be an...interesting night.

"Will you pair of fools get your act together?" She hissed once she reached them. "We're here in the mountains, with who knows what just outside this clearing, and you're shouting at each other?" She jabbed the robed human in the chest "Yes, the empire has killed a lot of people. But so has every government before them. Just like they've hired people like us-" she flung her arms out to take in the whole encampment, "-to do their killing for them. Or did you think we were on some noble quest?"

Before he could so much as start to form an answer, she turned on the imperial mage, and gave him a good jab in the chest as well. "And you. Going on and on about how great the empire is like you've forgotten you were on the run barely a day ago. The empire wants.You.Dead. Or did you think signing up with a gang of cutthroat killers and assassinating some breton rebel is going to redeem your name?" She snorted violently and strode away, angry enough that all romantic thoughts had fled her mind. With efficient, angry motions, she set up her bedroll and slipped inside, removing her blades from her belt, but keeping them within easy reach. They might have been working together, but she wasn't naive enough to trust her 'companions'.

Rajeem kept silent as the two men leapt to their feet and began a shouting match, but his hands were never far away from his weapons. He'd seen arguments turn into fights far too many times to allow himself to be caught off guard. "Should've gone off to bed when the elf said so." The argonian muttered to himself, watching as the khajiit woman marched over with eyes narrowed in anger. She laid into the men giving them a harsh speech about the empire and their current situation, like the masked assassin and the pale imperial had tried to do before her. Before either could come up with any sort of response, she turned and marched off. "Well you certainly cocked that up, didn't you?" Rajeem said, standing and rubbing his hands together. The fire was warm and he wasn't enjoying the thought of leaving it. But he needed rest, and with the two humans at each others throat, that wasn't going to happen there.
