I have two go-to characters. A Bosmer thief/assassin, because archery is my favorite combat and I like playing hedonistically.
Or a Nord/Imperial/Breton mage, which is my favorite to roleplay. Even though the College of Winterhold quest is kinda really boring for me at this point.

At the moment, I'm playing as a chick for the first time and decided to roleplay as Wonder Woman, so I'm only doing *good* quets. It's literally the first time I've defeated Alduin. I'm having a lot of fun with WW, makes me want to role play superheroes more often.

It kind of just comes to me as I work on the character. My nord, for instance, his father was a mercenary or legion soldier, and he learned how to fight from that. he became a warrior during his adult life as a member of a combat group/fighter's guild or a situation like that. may go barbarian for dragonborn status.

I'm only on my first playthrough now, got the game for Christmas and have been playing it since. I had no conception about the different skills and possible play styles, so my character turned out to be a kind of jack of all trades. Which is nice in some ways but limiting in others. For example my perks are too spread out. But I think my character is more warrior than anything else, though also very much a thief.

I think in my next game I'll go for a mage focus. Magic is a lot of fun in the game, and it should be really interesting trying to master it and go through the game with nothing but magic. Not sure how I'll fight dragons that way (magic has been quite ineffective on them when I've tried it so far), but I'll work it out and it should be really fun to work on that.

If you want to do the mage quest I suggest a little role playing with it. Work the mage story line and make it long. Don't rush through it. I did that and it was fun. What I did was consider what level I would need to be to move up the mage ranks. So Novice was levels 1-10 then the next one was 2-20 on up be level 50 to be the arch mage. I did a lot of questing to work my way up. But it felt more rewarding to be considered the most powerful mage in Skyrim and the Archmage to boot.

Mithradates (or anyone wanting to do a mage-type) can also avoid the college until later on in levels, and skill. RP that as the mage is independent while learning the basics, and chooses to test themselves when they learn later spells of adept+ tiers.

I usually go the extra mile and learn the lore of the race that I'm planning to play as, especially if it's one that I'm not familiar with. That way it helps me create a background for the character based on the beliefs of the average member of that race. I usually go for a pure warrior but I'm not against making mages, spellswords, thieves or assassins if the need arises.

I only ever play wizard or fighter types

My favorite race for Butt Kicking is an Orc . I love orcs full stop .

Usually my go to race for Spell Chucking is Breton and i did that for Daggerfall , Morrowind and Oblivion . Everyone naturally avoided high elves because of the weakness to magic rubbish .

They got rid of that silly racial quirk in Skyrim so I made me an awesome Altmer Wizard . I have no regrets .

I wanted to complete the werewolf and vampire mastered trophy on PS3 so i created a Breton who totally relies on being a Vamp or Wolf to kill anything worse than a skeever .

Then i chose to tackle two thief trophies so I made me another Orc . I never play thieves . It was quite refreshing .

I thought about it, and another way to work on a character is what I like to call "the hybrid scale" method. This involves taking a set of character archetypes, like battlemage or witch hunter, and trying to figure out where on the scale of hybrids they fall in between two of the three extremes (mage, thief, warrior). does not work for all archetypes, but works well for a good number of hybrids.
