My current character, Andraste, an Imperial, took the axe with her. She hasn't anywhere near the same level of sentiment as the Nords towards Ysgrammor and his companions, but instead she viewed it as a vital piece of history for the Empire, to whom she is still loyal despite having left the Legion. She couldn't just leave it out there, exposed to the elements, to be eroded away or stolen by bandits. So it is safely on display in Proudspire Manor, until she can figure out a more suitable place for it.

I've always just left it on the statue. I've only ever had one two-handed character and he was in the Imperial army so he had no business dealings with the Companions at all. None of my other characters would have taken it. They are almost always a Companion and would not have been so disrespectful. My evil characters are exclusively, sneak, archer type so they had no use for a massive weapon like that.

I used it a good bit till I made my own greatsword and named it Kein. Used it a long long time until I got to Yngol Barrow, ended up leaving the axe propped up against Yngol's throne. Figured it should stay there for some reason.

I baptized that Axe in the warm waters of Alinor, had it sanctified by Thalmor Council in the name of Auriel then returned unto him his Axe.

I took it in spite of myself being a Wood Elf, mainly for home decoration, but I also felt that if I could find it, a slightly more chaotic, power-hungry weirdo could find it, too. Being the most powerful person in the game, I placed it under my protection. And because it looks bad-ass on a wall.
