I came here to ask why people like the Dark Brotherhood at all. Not because they kill people or are assassins. That can be fun in video games, but something always rubbed me the wrong way with them, especially in Skyrim. My knowledge of them in other games isn't that great but I know it was a death cult formed by the Night Mother in honor of Sithis and killing people for others. The thing is, I don't think they work all that well. They're a death cult of assassins. That's the problem. They strike me as incredibly pretentious for this. They're murderers for hire, but they do it for Sithis. The client isn't going to give a damn about that though. They just want someone dead, but then the DB make a big deal of it and it drives me up the wall.

Well that's the DB for you. Atleast when your playing the dragon born in the quest line you don't have to "Hail Sithis" or "The Night Mother" you can hail who ever the heck you want which brings up another issue. Who gets your soul when you die XD because you can be a part of EVERY religion/cult group in Skyrim.

Most popular theory is that you end up in Sovngarde, regardless of race, or religion. Because dragonborn is aspect of Shor, and you were dragonborn since birth. Shor claims your soul cause he gave it to you, or smth.
Anyway, I'm having hard time disagreing with this theory. But I guess it's all up to one's imagination

Very good argument.

My issue is with death cults of assassins. It seems to make sense at first but it really seems like they should make it more clear to the client that the money isn't what's important, it's killing in Sithis' name. You know, real crazy stuff. They don't do that and instead just ask who they're out to kill and go do the job. Logically, that should make them even more difficult to approach. If I wanted someone dead, I wouldn't hire the loony going on about Sithis. Not just the dark brotherhood either, but cults of assassins in general really. The Red Mantis in Pathfinder are another.

We are talking about real Dark Brotherhood, right? Not that half-assed excuse for assassins that Astrid was leading.
Who risks their life to take another, for free? Money is indeed, a means to an end, but if they were going around Tamriel, talking about Sithis, Void, Dread Father and god-knows-what, then they wouldn't be what even Astrid's group is. Discrete.
It's only natural to ask for a money from your client. Also, forcing your religion down their throats isn't really professional.

Should I add that they actually need money? I mean, weapons and armor don't grow on trees, yes? Food does, at least, but I have yet to hear about a DB assassin doing agriculture...

Astrid's voice is enough to make me want to join every time. And Nazirs smack talk. I always enjoy it

Yeah, Astrid runs it more like a family business than a religious cult. She doesn't even like it when Cicero shows up with his whispering corpse that you're all supposed to worship like a goddess.

Personally I have a love/hate relationship with the whole Dark Brotherhood story line. Unlike the Companions, the members are likeable and affectionate towards each other and I ended up caring about them instead of tolerating their arrogant attitudes. And unlike the Mage's college, the quests you receive actually require some skill in stealth (you can become arch mage with very little magic experience) However, your options upon meeting Astrid for the first time are either kill the Dark brotherhood, or join them and get to know them all and become part of their family, then watch them all get wiped out any way, including the cute pet spider.

Then there's the fact that if you get caught killing important targets like Vitoria and Maro's son, you can get off with a slap on the wrist or flashing your thane's badge and carry on with your business, as if you had just killed a common farmer or beggar. These murders are supposed to have a big impact on the war threatening Skyrim, and you don't get captured and tortured?

It's more the core concept of it all. The dark brotherhood's existence seems paradoxical to me. A cult built around killers for hire. I never played their quests in Oblivion as I never got very far in that game (I got kind of bored of it) so I can't really say they're no good there either, it's just the idea of it. How much tribute do they give to sithis and the night mother when they're not out killin people or helping them fake their deaths (only oblivion DB quest I know aside from that rufio guy)? They're pretty damn important to them, but I never saw a lot of it.

This is why I never wanted to join them on skyrim, I was getting crazy mixed vibe going through reading the guide book. The eso one was way different and not a problem to me, i haven't tried the oblivion yet but i will enjoy it more without astrid around! I cannot barely stand her at all gods..

Ok This takes a bit of explaining lore wise so prepare you thinking gogles lol... SOOO. The DB was a death cult and is. They killed for sithis but made a bit of coin on the side. They worshiped the night mother and sithis. But astrid decided to disregard the five tenents witch were laws made by sithis himself. Astrid has no respect for sithis ore the night mother or the listener. Taking them down a path falling away from sithis.

That's so right!! Just looking at her and how she represents herself alone, my jaw dropped! The eso was way better same as oblivion.

She breaks them all like this.
Asks you to steal ciceros journal.
Dishonors the nightmother by not respecting her.
Asking you to kill cicero
Betraying you and the brotherhood.
And disobeying what the night mother says
As well as completely disregarding you authority as listener and the highest rank a mortal can achieve in the brotherhood.
By disregarding you she also dishonored the night mother once again by not listening to her authority in you.
