As we know, there's a civil war in Skyrim, so what side did you join?

I always join the Empire. My reason for doing so is kinda weird.
When you walk into their camps, before you join either faction, you're treated quite differently. The Empire is friendly and the Stormcloaks get aggressive.
I'm like, "Chill out, Stormcloaks! I'm just walking by!"

it all depends on the character I'm playing and how their feelings are I have had more then a few never join at all

The Stormcloaks, almost every time.
I don't know what it is about the empire, but they bother me.
There are alot of things that make the Stormcloaks more appealing and alot of big picture things that make the stormcloaks more appealing, but the empire always rubs me the wrong way in skyrim. I just can't stand them.

Like LuChao it depends on the character. I believe history will show that the Dragonborn successfully negotiated an uneasy truce between the sides. What happens after that is less clear; I'd like to think that he maintained peace by taking his place as rightful Emperor, uniting the Empire against the Thalmor. Some believe the Dragonborn is destined to languish in Apocrypha serving Hermaeus Mora. Unfortunately the latter seems more likely due to TES protagonists' tendency to fade into obscurity.

I'm OK with being Han Solo in this scenario

He doesn't have a rightful claim to the throne, he's dragonborn, but not of Septim(I know, not the actual family, shut up) stock. I like to think that the cannon is that the empire actually does fall. That's the direction everything is heading in. Unless the canon is also that the dragonborn destroyed the dark brotherhood rather than assassinating the emperor, I'm pretty sure the emperor is dead, there isn't an heir, and the council will be....bureaucratic in their ruling. I doubt the empire will last longer than another century at the rate things are going.

I've always joined the Empire, I absolutely hate the Stormcloaks, and I honestly believe that if they were to win the civil war and take the fight to the Aldmeri Dominion like they claim they will, they would be destroyed by the elves.
And Red is right, the Dragonborn doesn't have any claim to the throne, especially if he/she was the one to murder the emperor xD.
But it will be interesting to see who becomes the next Emperor, either a weak willed one, or a powerful one who starts another war with the Thalmor

Being the man to unite the Empire and gain victory over the Thalmor would grant him that right in the absence of an Emperor, just like Alessia and Tiber Septim in past eras. No need to assume the Dragonborn was the one pulling off the assassination either.

But the Dragonborn literally was the one who killed the Emperor, no one else in the Brotherhood could've done it.

The Dragonborn were required to be rulers to keep Oblivion from merging into Tamriel. That is no longer needed due to Martin's actions. Also you can't have the leader of the Empire be described as "Possible male/female Argonian/Dunmer/Bosmer/Khajiit/Nord/Redguard/Breton/Imperial/Orc".

I'm also bias cause I absolutely love Titus Mede and their dynasty. Man took control of the Imperial City with under a thousand men, and routed a rebellion with barely twice that. Not even 2,000 soldiers and he won the Stormcrown Interregnum. Skyrim itself endorsed him as their Emperor.

"This wasn’t court, and the Emperor wasn’t dressed for it. He wore a plain Colovian soldier’s tunic of dark gray wool and leather breeks. His crown was a plain gold circlet. A broadsword in a battered scabbard hung at his side. Two soldiers stood yards away, but Colin suspected that if he tried anything, he would be dead at Mede’s hand before either of them could move." - Lord of Souls
