Edit: I decided to just go back and redo the quest from the start. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I actually ended up looting even more stuff than the first time and had a pretty amazing moment getting NPCs to fight each other. Overall worth, I'd say.

... Now that I think about the pun, this is not about a bug in the game but it has to do with bugs. ... Moving on.

So, I'm doing the 'Loud and Clear' quest for the Thieves Guild. I was pretty happy taking my time, looting all the stuff I want from the Goldenglow house and sneaking around. The whole quest took me roughly an hour to complete. The final portion I did was burning the beehives. Now, I have NO idea how I managed to screw this up but I pulled out my Flames spell, burned three of them and peaced out before the guards came.

When I went to finish the quest with Brynjolf, he immediately tells me I "made a mess of things" and that I was "only supposed to burn three of the hives." I was like "This is leading into a joke, right? Playing a funny rib on the new guy!" Then he says I'm not getting a cut. So, I'm pretty confused right now.

I load up my quick save that, like a dumbass, I made right AFTER I burned the hives. After spinning around, one of the other hives FAR off from the ones I burned was on fire. I made NO extra saves during the quest, only quicksaving before/after crucial parts. My hard save was made just before I set off to the Goldenglow estate which means an hour spent trying to do this quest carefully was wasted.

Now I'm pissed, albeit I could do a few of things at this point. I could either redo the quest from the beginning and take another hour to loot everything I got; I could just not take the cut and proceed on; or I could proceed on and console command in the money I would have gotten. What I actually want is to get my cut AND get the dialogue praise for doing the job as precisely as possible.

I tried console commands to change the quest stage (turns out you can't go back), restarting the quest and changing the stages one by one (this caused Brynjolf AND Mercer to glitch and say "This person is busy") and trying to disable/enable the burning beehive in the hopes it would respawn good as new (it didn't).

Apologies for the long post for such a quick question, but I guess I kind of want to vent about how mad I am at myself for not making multiple saves and for how nonsense the beehive randomly going up in flames was. If anyone has an idea of what I can do to salvage complete success in this quest without redoing it, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Also, the pun was because of the beehives. Bees - bugs - BUGGING me.

... I'll show myself out.

This does happen on occasion. And you have to be very careful. I never use flames spells for this quest because it always happened when I used the spell. I always just 'borrow' a torch nearby and one by one light them on fire. One by one, you ask? Light it on fire, then wait. If the next one catches on fire, wait some more. If no more catch on fire, then light the last one. Obviously, it's best to save before you do anything like this because... Skyrim. Bugs and glitches galore!

I usually light one of them in the middle. That way it has a chance to catch it's neighbors on fire. Then I'm done. Just be careful, I think it's... scripted?... to catch the other hives on fire.

Well I appreciate the reply but that ... doesn't really help my situation.

Yeah, I don't know what code you could use to reverse it. I'm also on PC and don't know much on how to fix that part of the quest. Sorry about that..

Shiney, let's be bad guys.
I'd just move on w/o the cut or praise. And be smug as plops because all that stuff you stole is probably worth a good deal more than the payout.

I always used the flames spell and never had an issue with burning more than three on the PS3. Maybe it is just a PC bug?
