Smh. Companions rarely ever get in my way, and when they do all I got to do is walk into them for a second and they'll move. I have no idea how this ridiculous stereotypical misconception started, but on the latest patched version of the game (and many before it) it is absolutely false with the exception of animal companions.

As for their usefulness in combat, they are absolutely invaluable if you are doing a challenge run (playing on a high difficulty without powerful skills or equipment). They only really get in your way in that they tend to draw aggro first when you are trying to sneak, but even then it isn't difficult to simply adjust and use that your advantage. Besides which in most stages of stealth play you'll really only get one or two attacks off before you're detected anyways, making a follower all the more useful to attract attention so that you can retreat and re stealth. If you're annoyed that they keep you from getting melee sneak attacks, well you're not going to get those anyways until you're very decently leveled. And even then they serve as a good distraction if you allow them to charge ahead so that you can out maneuver your opponent so that the low stealth level isn't such a big deal.

They can even carry more loot for you. I'm all for individual play style and no way necessarily being the end all be all, but the benefits of a companion objectively far outweigh the negatives.
While all true, how do you get around how annoying they are, repeating the same thing over and over and over and doing the same things repeatedly.

I do believe you are wrong about their getting in the way, attracting unwanted attention when using stealth and their arbitrarily disappearing and not returning to the point of origin. Blocking doorways, hallways and any other sort of movement is classic, especially for those of us on console. It may be better than at initial release, but it is a fact and it is insulting that you are calling the many hundreds of posters that have stated it liars.

Because you experience differs from that of most other forum members does not make you the authority on the subject. Perhaps you play on PC and make use of any number of mods. That may mitigate your experience.

While I agree that companions can be very helpful when you are at an extremely low level, can serve as trainers and can act as damage sponges at higher difficulties - IMHO, followers/companions are far more trouble than they are worth.

As to you supposition that you can use them as pack-mules - while that may be true, how on earth do you justify it in an RPG sense and why, oh why do you even need them? I usually stop collecting most everything before level 20 as it is completely unneeded. Even with a minimum of enchanting skills, you can create an sell items of far higher value than anything you might find by then.
I play on 360.

Them repeating stuff doesn't really bother me, after awhile my brain just automatically starts filtering it out. Dragon's Dogma was worse about it and not even that bothered me unless the pawns had really annoying voices.

Well, I have had them arbitrarily disappear once or twice, but since day one of release I can't remember ever having an issue with them getting in the way. Simply sprinting into them has ALWAYS pushed them out of the way and caused them to start walking in the direction I pushed.

It simply isn't a problem, and I have no idea how this stereotype spread like wildfire, but I hardly believe that no one else has ever tried pushing them nor that my own game is somehow unique. If people choose to be insulted, then I'll apologize. I could have phrased it more tactfully. But while it is a joke I've always laughed at, I simply don't see the actual substance behind it.

In higher difficulties followers are even more important and useful. Just about all AIs are. They are tankier and stay in play longer, and hold aggro longer. Not to mention they can actually stay on their feet long enough to use potions.

Need? It's not so much a need as a convenience.

I play on PS3. I Normally use followers and it took a long time for me to start to feel comfortable enough to go it alone. Sure they can get in the way, but just walk or sprint into them and they move. I tend to tune them out after a bit. I have a bad habit of picking up things I don't need or smithing and alchemy ingredients so they carry all that for me. I like having that backup in a fight too. Overall I use followers a lot more than I don't. They don't annoy me too bad. Though sometimes I want to Fas Ro Dah them off a high cliff. And Lydia has a bad habit of jumping in front of my arrows.

I like to have companions, but sometimes they can just get in the way. I don't have a problem with it if there is a companion in most situations. Most of the time, I like to just go lone wolf.

I don't bring companions. I'm a pure mage with zero armor, and the thrill of being all alone in a fight is very awesome. You're basically a one man army, and your opponents don't even realize you're in the vicinity until a dagger gets plunged into their backs. It's a very awesome experience. Also, I get to sneak all I want without a companion to ruin it for me, and I get to keep all the experience points for my different skills because I am the one who has to kill everyone in the room. The only downside is that I don't have extra carry weight, but a true gamer knows how to manage with a very limited carry capacity.

I like to bring one of The Companions with me when I'm doing their quest line. I just like them. Farkas is my spouse. (Farkas is Hungarian for Wolf and Vilkas is Lithuanian for Wolf) and my character is named Neshoba which is the Choctaw word for Wolf. I generally fly solo but I also like Marcurio from Riften. If I'm a caster I bring someone tanky, If I'm tanky I bring a caster.

I'd bring someone if they were actually useful but alas that's not the case in Skyrim. Either they sabotage my stealthy approach by going in guns blazing thus aggroing every enemy in the room or when I'm going in in pure adrenaline mode they decide to step into the arc of my battleaxe's swing and thus I end up killing them. Throughout my absurdly numerous playthroughs I learned that I'm better off doing everything alone. At least then I know that if things go wrong it's mostly my fault.

P.S. Welcome to the forums Erinn. May you enjoy yourself to the fullest. :beermug:

I almost always adventure on my own, except sometimes I get a dog follower of some kind. There are a couple of husky companions on the Nexus that I really like. Meeko and Vigilance are great, too.

Humanoid followers just get in my way and are generally annoying.

Horses are my favourite companions. :p

i generally travel with a follower because it greatly increases your ability to carry loot out of a dungeon .... and if you choose wisely it males for some nice eye candy (Aela with a forsworn head dresss and armor, glass gauntllets and boots).

oh, and if you are married to your follower you het the lovers comfort resting bonus pretty much everywhere you go,
