So I decided to play (at least for now) without going into Bleak Falls Barrow and getting the tablet and becoming Dragonborn. Because dragons... all the time every time every dragon, dragon, dragon. It get to be so bad that you can't travel anywhere, especially fast travel, without a dragon showing up and possibly killing NPCs. I mean yeah shouts can be cool, but I have seen the main quest line. I know what happens. So I'm wondering if anyone else has done this and how it worked out for them.

I have, actually. I haven't gone super far in that playthrough, partly because it's on PS3, and now I have a PS4 and Red's Xbox 360, but the character was meant to exist in Skyrim before the Dragonborn, and be researching word walls, which is much easier when they aren't guarded by giant assholes breating fire and/or ice.

It is WAY easier to learn the words and loot the chests at the word walls. Also... I am saving lives. No dragon attacks on poor random citizens. You're welcome Skyrim.

Pretty much on all my characters now I stop playing the main story at the Blade in the Dark quest. I think (i have no idea for sure) that if Alduin doesn't summon the dragon, he doesn't summon any others. Have gotten more then a few characters in the level 40 plus area and never see any dragons.

Actually I rarely become dragonborn. The whole major story line is kinda tedious - climb up those thousand steps to High Hrothgar, go to that boring dungeon to get the horn, go to the party at Elenwen's house, faff around with the blades, more talking with greybeards, go to Black reach, yawwwn....

Normally when i start a new character, he will report to jarl Balgruuf, visit Farengar and say "screw that, I'm not helping some wizard with his research, I've got more important things to do" then wander off and do his own thing.

One of my favorite plays has been as a character who was a former priest of Arkay, and he still believed it was wrong to go interfering with ancient nord resting places, and that's why he refused to go into Bleakfalls Barrow, because it meant disturbing the dead. and so most of the quests I did focus on involved helping restless dead find rest again, so he would only fight draugr and ghosts if they had been woken up by necromancers.

This is exactly how I feel.

There's plenty of fun to be had in the game without becoming Dragonborn. I find it more fun to stick to one particular hold and focus on all local quests instead of traveling from one end of Skyrim to the other. Even the guards hand you random quests by spouting about dangers in nearby areas for you to explore. Or focus on building skills you haven't used much before. Practice pickpocket on the townsfolk or practice illusion spells on the wildlife. Do odd jobs for farmers and innkeepers and try cooking meals and see how they help you when you're out traveling. It makes for much more immersive game play when you don't have to worry about the next dragon attack.

I tend to make one hold my home and only have a house there. In this particular instance it's Riften. As thane I've decided to work with Mjoll and clean up The Rift.

It might be an interesting idea except I rely on dragon attacks to farm the raw materials to smith dragon armor ...
