No. You have stored the souls in a soul jem(?) And will use them on sight of a hidden word

I was wondering what would happen of a dragonborn died. Would the dragon soles go out?
may depend on race, don't know if there's a Nord only policy in Sovngarde, but I'm 110% certain that a Nord Dragonborn would go to there. As for the other races, they're respected religious afterlife utopias apply. are you new? head over to the lobby and post an intro thread, nice to see new people :)

When the dragon is killed by the Dragonborn, its soul it devoured, obviously. What do we use those souls for? Knowledge of the Shouts.

If a Dragonborn dies or is killed, the dragon souls that he/she devoured do not go flying off into Mundus, since the souls are traded for knowledge. So it's just the soul of the Dragonborn themselves.

(A theory I have is that the Dragonborn's soul would not be able to be captured because of it's sheer size (after all, who's the biggest, baddest, Alduin killing machine of all?), except maybe in the exception of The Black Star.)

I'm pretty sure that even the Black Star wouldn't be able to hold the Dragonborn's soul. He's essentially a god in a mortal body. Even dragon souls can't be put into soul gems, and the Dragonborn's is not only a dragon's soul, but an aspect of Akatosh himself. I doubt that even a fragment of a god's soul could be trapped inside of some puny crystal.

Ah, you're right. I hadn't thought about it in that aspect. Silly me, forgetting the single most important piece of lore for the Dragonborn.

um, when Myraak is defeated, don't we absorb a bunch of dragon souls from his body? Or is that just the ones Myraak nicked from the dragons that were killed by the player?

I've never had that happen (regarding Miraak), so... I couldn't tell you. When I had the fight with him, I remember him getting skewered my Hermaus Mora, but I don't remember if I absorbed any dragon souls.

if you remember whenever you killed a dragon during the dragonborn quest (after you meet him and before you kill him) he will come and steal the dragon souls (sometimes he didn't) the souls you got from him after you defeat him are just the souls he had stolen from you... so yes basically sorry lol not fully awake

Mind you, the Dwemer sure tried to trap the soul of Lorkhan.

When a Dragonborn kills and absorbs the soul of a dragon... that soul of the slain dragon becomes part of the Dragonborn. With each soul of the slain dragon makes the Dragonborn stronger by intercepting the concept of the dragon languages thus gaining him more access to Thu'um knowledge.

When the Dragonborn dies so does all of his knowledge.
