How do you backstab a Dragon?
To be fair on the Blades they don't actually swear to serve you as so many assume. Delphine herself makes it clear she's acting Grandmaster and they will aid you on your path, but ultimately they've gone back to being Dragonguard and seek to slay all dragons. The Blades only ever served the Dragonborn Emperors a long time ago and not once do they ever say they're at your command.
True. I suppose the entire questline wouldn't have been so bad if it hadn't been so poorly written. Neither Delphine, nor Esbern had any redeemable characteristics to them. They were just unpleasant and didn't really offer any sort of "assistance" at all. They just order you about and then give you ultimatums if you don't do exactly what they tell you to do. Sad really 'cause I kind of liked the blades in Oblivion.

Personally I just found them unpleasant and dictatorial, narrow minded and paranoid (understandably), and ultimately pointless.

I never help them, admittedly, but, in some ways I do feel for them and the loss of their respectability and glory.

DON'T EXPECT SPOILER WARNINGS FROM ME
Main-questline chat spoilers: you have been warned.
"Dragons have returned so our purpuse is clear again. We need to stop them." - Delphine
-"We"-
WE!?
-I- DID THE TALKING, THE STALKING, THE SEEING AND THE SLAYING!! And what did they do, HM?

"Esbern, he.. he's alive?" - Delphine
Oh, what kind of man could he be? Wanted by Thalmor, Delphine's old friend...
What did I find?
"FOOLS, how much time needs to pass for you all to open your eyes, and see whats going on? Alduin has returned! It's an end to us all" - Esbern
So, in a nutshell: I found half-skeleton geezer living in faeces with one leg in grave, that somehow knows that Alduin is alive at this very moment, BUT - DID - NOT hear greybeards shouting Do-vah-kiin and pretty much shaking half of Nirin.
wow. WOW~!

The only time they were of use was informing you about Dragonrend. But Blades were originaly Akaviri-Nords Dragon hunters that dedicated themselves to dragonborn. After single, and only, useful thing that they had done, Esbern and Delphine got so high that they started giving YOU conditions. Arrogance, at its best. Im talking about morale here. We saw aincent Blades kneeling with their swords pointing at sky, in dragonborns honor. You walk in, they like: ale is too warm, gimme another one, colder please. -But its been here, for like, 4 fukin Eras. -Who gives a poop? Ale is ale.
And oh yes, you killed Alduin. Wonderful! GLORIOUS!! But why should we ever congratulate you for saving our sorry hides, why? You had to do it, it was your job. Now you go kill another drake, then we might start hanging out.

The stuff with Delphine. I wanted to be part of the Blades because that cool armor but having to kill Paarthunax for it was crap. I only did it once just to see and I hated it. I refuse to do it anymore and just cheat via console for that armor if I want it.

I'm also not too fond of the Dark Brotherhood stuff. I love killing random people but I really hated having to kill Nilsine, or whatever her name was. That was messed up.
My main reason for not doing the Dark Brotherhood stuff is because Cicero annoys me SO MUCH. I immediately want to kill him. I have never let him live at the end of it.

The blades suffer from bad writing, and half thought out plot lines. The ultimatum (won't say, not sure about spoiler rules in this forum) that they give you at the end of the game doesn't make any logical sense.

It also annoys me that they treat the Dragonborn like crap, when historically their whole organization revered them.
