My very first character was a male Redguard. I didn't know what i was doing because I sucked at combat and got overwhelmed by the number of quests I was accepting. I joined every faction that invited me to join. Eventually I got the hang of the game (reduced the difficulty setting to the lowest). I married Farkas and fought with the Stormcloaks and killed Alduin and became Harbinger of the Companions and Arch Mage of Winterhold. I made inconsistent decisions. I would help old ladies find their lost jewellery and do odd jobs for farmers, but I also joined the Dark Brotherhood and tried stealing stuff for the Thieves Guild.
I have recreated the same character since then (same race and same sex, different appearance and name) and given him an actual backstory. He still joined the Companions and married Farkas and became Dragonborn, but none of the other stuff. And he didn't use magic, he focused on archery and dual wielding. I started to enjoy role-playing more and learned to focus my gameplay decisions based on the character I created.
