Not without mods (or console commands, but wouldn't recommend that route). If you're on PC, you can even choose between destroying and disbanding them.
I have no experience with the latter, but the former is excellent.
If you're on console, the best you can do is not join them, I'm afraid. I believe almost all of the members are essential.

How does this Mod work around you entering the sewers to fetch Esbern?

You can simply ask Keerava about Esbern (I always do unless I decide to use prior knowledge and skip the asking part). It even makes sense if you're RPing; innkeepers are always a good souce of rumours and the like.
