You don't have do specific quests as far as I know. Just help out enough citizens and eventually you will get the title.

Nope. Wujeeta is essential to start the quest "Skooma Trade" which in turn is essential for you to become Thane of Riften because it opens up dialogue with the Jarl to do said quest.

Yeah, but presumably OP already started this, or else why is the inheritance coming in? The only thing you need Wujeeta for for that quest is to give a potion then intimidate into telling you her hookup.

I guess if you gave her a potion, then forgot to immediately identify the dealer, she could die in that interim, but how likely is that, since it's the next thing in the exact same dialogue?
