So I've been thinking of a cool new thread to throw in here that will be interesting to talk about. I've been getting a ton of inspiration from various sources, and I was also curious about something. What inspires something out of other people. Characters, music, stories and all that. You're all welcome to talk about anything that pertains to something inspired by something else. Naturally, no spoilers for certain things. Anything is fair game though, and if you need help how to funnel that inspiration to actually applying it, this is also a good place to do it.

Color schemes, some random shapes can also inspire character design. The very idea of how Ladybug wings work helped inspire a character design for a web series I used to make.
This is a rough draft of an emblem but my shower handle helped inspire it.

Very cool Benthos. Inspiration comes from the strangest and most unexpected places.

Music is the inspiration for me. Every good song plays out a scene in my head which is slightly different every time I listen to it. Music is where I get the vast majority of my ideas.

Same here, Gid. If I want to have a certain type of scene, I need mood music. I've been listening to lots of Everybody's Gone to the Rapture for my serious stuff that I've been writing because it puts me into that mood to be very somber and serious about the scene. Here's a good one from the soundtrack that I love.

Also some really serious stuff from Undertale I've been listening to. Don't click links below if you haven't played or seen it played as a quick warning
Megolovania
Guilt
Good to be Alive - The Call (Pacifist Themes)
Nightmare - Duality (Genocide Themes)

Also let me note that everyone is more than welcome to dump random music that inspires or reminds you of your characters or story. That was part of the original intention of this thread anyway

<3 That song, but I'll have to skip the Undertale stuff until I get around to finishing an LP. I love the gravity that the game has despite its completely unimposing and ridiculous appearance. It is a true test of humanity unlike almost any game I have ever come across. The freedom of choice is also mostly good.

And the best part is even if you've finished the game over and over, there is still more. You can choose very well what you do and the game has a mind enough to know things that you've done. I'll surprise you in ways that you never guess from a simple little game made by one person. It's insane how much of that general spirit is finding it's ways into my writing. I think a certain few things have even changed because I have gotten so intently obsessed with the characters as well as the fan's interpretation of them, and it's very much something I want people to take out of in my own work... minus the fourth wall breaks despite how cool they are in Undertale.

I take tons from all sorts of media; music, movies, comics, anime, video games.
That is the preliminary thoughts on it.
I think a favorite of mine is where I take a work then use it to create dissonance from the original theme. Leading to some pretty crazy concepts, some that are not worth sharing. :p

But yeah I am that guy who often gets super into something and it effects every project on from that point.

I can sympathize with that, especially while I was still buried in Dark Souls.

Well considering my deep obsession with Undertale of late, I've got some guilt in that as well

Ever since I took my Aesthetics class what seems like fifty years ago I always try to look for patterns in everything. I did a whole project on the Golden Ratio and the Vitruvian Man and the Ziggaraut and it was really fascinating and an interesting way to look at art. Even music and non optical art has those pattern which appeal to us for whatever reason, and trying to get to the bottom of that is very fascinating to me.

Creating characters has itself become a sort of art form for me lately. I do usually have to wait for inspiration to strike - but even when it does it's usually only for one part of the character I'm trying to create; like the name or what-have-you. Just a little while ago I was working on a new character for Fallout: New Vegas. It'll be my first playthrough if you're wondering. What inspired me first was watching a movie. I don't remember which one it was but I do remember inspiration struck during a romantic scene. The main protagonist was a young woman with a dark past who in her own way was trying to solve it, though she had no idea how. Anyway so the name came from watching that movie: Clover. Because a clover can be lucky or unlucky, in my opinion. Find the rare four leaf clover and you are in luck, but find nothing but less than four leaf clovers and you're not. It just seems really fitting for a female Courier character. Anyway I regularly use things like Pinterest, Tumblr, and We Heart It to help me flesh out my characters. I'll do Google searches on certain things to help on that front, as well. I have had inspiration strike me from movies, songs, books and other random things. I remember once it struck me from looking at a flower bush in my apartment complex that was shaped oddly. If I want inspiration to strike me or I'm trying to accomplish something specific, social media is great for that (the ones I listed are the ones I use). I can search for certain images or just go through old collections of images to inspire me. I'm a pretty visual person so this works well. Watching anime is a great way to get inspired for me as well.
