My cousin needed a loan apparently to buy a house in northern California , so i gave him a large sum of money to help lower down the cost. He used it to illegally buy assault rifles and body armor, and he along with like 10 other people were planning to attack the Capital Building. He apparently was the "founding father' of a group he called the Bear Flag Independence Movement. Thankfully someone reported suspicious activity and he was arrested before anything could happen. But what of they track the money back to me and I get in serious trouble. I had no part in it!

I don't think you need to worry. Of course you might not get your money back.

You could actually get in trouble for with holding evidence from the authorities if they do find out you lent him the money and you haven't told them beforehand. They could also possibly charge you with conspiracy. Would the authorities be able to track the money back to you? Do you have anything in writing about why you lent him the money? In any case, I'm no lawyer. I only know a little about the law because I have a mom that's a pre-paid legal. But I would highly suggest consulting a lawyer. If you do, be sure to pay them something, anything - could even be a penny. That will ensure that the lawyer keeps what you tell him confidential. It's a law that if a lawyer is retained - basically if you pay them - they have to keep whatever you tell them confidential. And if you do decide to talk to the authorities, for the love of God don't do it without a lawyer by your side! I hope this helps somewhat. Good luck!

IF the authorities track the money to you(which isn't likely, they usually don't care about where the money came from if they catch the "leaders") then tell them exacctly what you explained to us. It isn't the first time that someone has lied to family to get money to commit illegal acts. If you didn't know before he was reported and you didn't have any reason to suspect, then you have plausible deniability.

Now, if they track you down and decide they're going to arrest you, remember two things:
1) They have to have to have an actual reason, and a warrant to arrest you. The whole "Matter of Homeland Security" bullplops doesn't actually work if you know your plops. On that note, get a lawyer, preferably one who knows their plops.

2) You don't have to prove your innocence. They have to prove your guilt. If they can't PROVE it, you should be in the clear, because seriously, it isn't illegal to loan family money.

Try to get as much proof as you can as possible that you are innocent. Any way possible. Maybe you paid him a check? If you wrote a memo you could use that.

My advice? Go to the authorities first and tell them exactly what you stated to us. (Like Red said) That shows you're coming clean and also innocent.

As the saying goes... If you got nothing to hide, why hide it?

Thanks for the help guys. They did ask my cousin where he got the money to buy his weapons and ammo, and he told them me. I told the authorities that I was giving him a loan under the impression he was going to buy a house. I not totally free though. They are going through paper work phone calls ect. I can't blame them though, considering the circumstances.

Then it sounds like you did the right thing and have done all you can. You're probably in the clear and it's now out of your hands so I wouldn't worry about it. Glad your brother at least had the balls to tell the truth.

If you think a gaming forum is the best place for advice, I fear you have more problems that you described.
This is a very tight knit community. We're practically family by this point.

True, but that doesn't give us any legal expertise; well-meaning but inaccurate advice may do more harm than good in cases like this.
Except some of us do have experience dealing with the law and law enforcement, and a few of us actually are good at researching these kinds of things.
Not saying we're experts, but it wasnt a BAD idea
