I've noticed that a lot of people mention having different enchanted gear for different situations. I've never really done this; I find the gear that suits me best, and I stick to it, as it's always highly versatile (for instance: ebony boots & ebony gauntlets [both enchanted and legendary], legendary ebony mail, and a Dragon Priest mask). Situational gear, like fire resistance boots, have never really suited me; regardless of the fact that I can easily swap it out fr different resistance gear. Am I alone in this?

Nope. Just use the same gear throughout the entire game. Once I've enchanted it the way I want, I rarely switch. The only exception would be that I may use different gear if I'm doing particular factions like Vamp, Companions, TG or DB. Other than that, almost never.

In my opinion, the entire point of creating a character is so that you can find gear that most suits you and your character.

I remember I've had three different elemental resistance necklaces (Fire, Frost and Shock) that I've switched around depending on the situation (mainly dragon battles and high level mages), but I've never goner further than that. It's just way too much of a hassle - plus carrying around several pieces of the same slot equipment eats up valuable inventory space.

Yes I do this - for haggling (which I suspect isn't exactly the kind of thing you're talking about, but it's relevant nonetheless!)

At all times regardless of whatever other gear I'm carrying, I always carry around (1) Cicero's Clothes, (2) the Masque of Clavicus Vile and (3) a necklace enchanted with Fortify Barter crafted while using a +30% enchanting potion. After a quest or whatever I put on this gear when I visit traders.

As far as I'm aware this combination will get better prices than anything else and means I can sell an item for 100% of its value, which just makes it so easy to accumulate wealth.

I always seem to fall back to my old habits. No matter what kinda build I make. I try to make an overall player with good levels across the table? Bow and sneak are through the roof.

I try making multiple sets of armor? I forget to switch because I'm too busy sneaking and shooting.

No matter what my plans are. I always resort to sneaking with a bow and always forget about everything else:/

I was about to say I don't do this but I kinda realized I do once I was halfway through typing this. lol so here's how.
I carry two necklaces, one with a Fortify Archery enchantment (that I will put on with the Dark Brotherhood cowl to get max archery damage to fight dragons with) and one with an underwater breathing enchantment in case I want to dive deep underwater to get a random treasure chest or explore a shipwreck without worrying about casting the corresponding spell over and over again - or drowning.
I also carry different weapons for different situations. I carry the Nightingale Bow (shock and frost on one bow is very useful), and a fire enchanted Nordic bow, as well as an unenchanted, fully upgraded Dwarven crossbow. I carry arrows of varying quality and bolts of various quality including the Exploding elemental bolts from the Dawnguard. I also carry Dawnbreaker as it works the best on undead, Dragonbane for dragons, a shock enchanted Nordic sword for use on Solstheim where most of the enemies are fire resistant (for whatever reason I dislike using Dragonbane for its shock damage and prefer to use it only on dragons), and finally a firey soul trap enchanted Dragonbone Mace to fill soul gems with to recharge all my weapons.
As far as armors go, I tend to stick with Vampire Royal Armor with Nightingale bracers and boots with either Morokei or an enchanted circlet, and enchanted ring, for added magicka regen. I probably won't change this set up until I get my Enchanting and Smithing maxed out good enough to make myself something better. :) As far as resists go, I just carry resist magic, resist fire and resist frost potions on me. One less piece of equipment to have to carry with me.
I really only do this on my main character though. Maybe it's because she's my first playthrough and that's how I learned to play on that character, maybe because she's a mage and a bit of a jack-of-all-trades. But on my others, like my warrior or my thief, I don't do this. Go figure. :p But nah, you're not alone on that.

Uhm... I'm guessing you collect absolutely nothing on your travels. I mean, honestly, just how high would your stamina have to be to carry all of that and be able to pick up loot as well!

You could just be a total boss like me and create a set of gear that covers all possible vulnerabilities thus dooming the entirety of Tamriel to inevitable defeat!

Duel enchants on your gear, whatever your focus is being light heavy or magic school robe-a-dobes.

@Daelon DuLac - Lmao, hoarding is easy with 2000+ Weight capacity!

Edit: To answer the Topic creators question, I think NAY for regular gear swaps, understandable when going from low to high levels and crafting, refinement is the best way in the long haul, definitely build your gear around your characters skill set as someone above stated, heavy for melee etc, adding enchantments along the way.

I play on legendary but don't usually take the extra effect perk to allow dual enchantments, so reaching the magic cap isn't enough to withstand dragon breath attacks from higher level dragons like ancient and revered dragons. For that reason I carry different necklaces to resist fire and frost and equip the appropriate one for dragon fights.

The fun thing about not using dual enchantments is there are lots of items in the game that you can't replicate with your own enchanting, like a necklance of warmth (70% frost resist) or the firewalker (70% fire resist). It keeps the game interesting after hitting 100 enchanting. It means lots of the unique items in the game like dragon masks, Galdour Amulet etc. are worth acquiring

At the moment I'm also carrying fortify conjuration gear that I can switch out to if I need to revive a dead thrall, meaning I haven't had to put any perks in conjuration to reduce the magica cost of spells

I actually think being susceptible to damage, atleast by 25% keeps the game challenging, its not fun when you're invincible.

Dragons still keep me on my toes on Legendary dealing decent breath damage, I also like your comment about Daedric artifacts or useful items with unique enchants - my plan was to equip atleast 10 Daedric artifacts on 10 followers/thralls, eventually I'll get round to it...I already have obtained alot of them.

By the end game I usually have my character so well min/maxed that they can fill almost any class role without having to switch gear.

I agree with you, but a 60% resist that I enchant myself is fine. Since I use dual enchanting, my vamps don't really need to worry about fire damage and, honestly, magic resistance is a must for me since those dern mages not only have far better aim than I do, but, apparently have unlimited magicka.

I just hate mages, even when I'm playing one. Just a Nord at heart I guess.

I agree. The trick is finding the right balance! If you go too far limiting your abilities then deathlord archers, briarhearts, high level dragons, high level vampires and seeker vindicators can become a massive problem

I think Extra Effect is the single most OP perk and is best avoided, but the simplest and most effective way to keep the low, mid and high levels balanced is avoiding enchanting altogether. My next build is definitely going to be a no enchanting character, it's always fun letting the random items you find determine how your character is equipped

Why not just download a mod that makes the enemies harder?

@ Harkin: Yeah, I used to play it on console. Then I found out that you can make your character Pack-man on PC, so I made the switch.

Kohlar the Unkilled

Time for some ale
I don't really switch around my gear, but with a couple exceptions.

1. My Dragon Priestess build: Usually she wears Dukaan's mask for extra frost power, but will occasionally switch to Zahkriisos or Ahzidal depending upon the situation, (for instance if she wants to use Lightning Storm to take out a dragon or a horde of bandits she'll don Zahkriisos).

2. Many of my characters carry a ring or necklace, (or both) of "Mammoth Might" or some such carry weight enchantment just in case they get bogged down with too much ale. :beermug:

When in doubt, follow the fox.
I actually just started using situational gear! OMG! SO much better, especially for earlier levels. Reduce a mage to a wimp with an iron dagger in about 3 hits. Make all the draugr run. I find it so much more satisfying than pure power, especially when I don't have a whole lot of that.
