How do you backstab a Dragon?
So, I've started my mage character for my return to Skyrim and am having fun with necromancy.

By level 22 or so I've a 90 in conjuration already, and had the ritual stone as well as revenant on hand.

At Saarthal, after Tolfdir deserted me, Lydia and I are making our way through Saarthal and hit the room with the Drauger Deathlord. Needless to say, I summoned my Dremora Lord (using my newly acquired spell) and it was no contest. Between Lyd's and Butch (that's what I call my Lord), the Deathlord went down quick.

Now, on a larf, and knowing that Jyrik was coming up pretty quick, I used my staff of Dread Zombie on the Deathlord and, at the same time, and completely by mistake used my Ritual Stone Power when, lo and behold, apparently, every drauger I'd taken out on my route here started to pour through the double door behind us (there must have been a dozen!).

I had thought they'd start disappearing rather quickly after that, but, by the time I made it to the final door to the entry to Jyrik's chamber and the Orb, everybody was still there!

I knew something was up and yet Tolfdir didn't say a thing about my hord of undead followers, nor did Lyd's (although I'm sure she used to it at this point, as many as she's seen me raise :)).

Sure, Tolfdir had to suck some energy from the Orb for Jyrik to be vulnerable, but, boy did he go down in that dogpile in seconds once it happened.

The problem I have now, is that, apparently, I have a long term group following me about - a drauger deathlord, a dremora lord (Butch), Lydia and about a dozen assorted drauger from restless to wights. They've followed me until I turned the game off last night! (It was almost 2 hours at that point).

Needless to say, while fun, it's a bit crowded and it's a bit boring to never having to be in actual combat.

Odd thing is, as we walked back to Whiterun last night (BTW Fort Kastav was absolutely no issue, since, apparently, neither my Dremora nor my Deathlord can die, although I'll admit, I did lose 2 of my restless's), I still seem to be able to raise just about anything, from bandits to vampires to frostbite spiders and they behave like normal raised dead (turning to ash in about a minute).

I hope I don't have this horde with me forever more. I hate to think I needed to kill them all myself (and, at this point, I don't even know if I can kill the Deathlord or the Dremora).

This is one weird glitch!

I started (or re-started) my Orc Shaman character, and was just thinking about the intricacies of raising dead, the various spells, etc, and realized I know very little about the whole process. The first time around, I just used Raise Zombie, and had some fun but ultimately didn't do much with the whole Necromancer idea. I'd like to get better at the whole concept, so any recommendations/tips/cautionary tales etc would be greatly appreciated. In other words HELP ME HAVE HORDES OF ZOMBIES TOO! :)

And I have seen the "Thrall Thread:Living with the Dead" thread but to be completely honest, my head spins when I try to make sense of it all lol Definitely a fault of mine, not the authors and contributors to that thread, believe me....!

I think it has something to do with using a Staff of Dread Zombie and the Ritual Stone at the exact same time. Something was glitching, obviously.

I am going to try to duplicate it with the same circumstances tonight on a prior save of the same character and am going to experiment with the stone and the Aetherium Crown as well.

I have had similar instances happen with the Stone when I've used it on the Crown previously (I was followed around by a horde of undead spiders for days that I'd raised in Ysgramor's tomb one time) that haven't dispelled.

I am wondering if it has something to do with very high conjuration points, having the dual thrall and zero cast cost at the same time?

Oye! Experimenting needed.

A tip if you want to have fun and are a newbie to necromancy. There's a glitch with the Ritual Stone and the Aetherium Crown that, once you place the Stone on the Crown, you can use the stone unlimited times by simply removing the crown and replacing it. Every time you place it, you get a new usage of the stone. That's a glitch that I've had be true on every playthrough. I like to do it on my Vampire Lord characters. I did it once at the battle of Whiterun and kept ending up with more and more dead soldiers at my beck and call. It was kind of cool.

Another one I love is to raise giants & mammoths and have them trek along with you for a bit. Try that one up by Bonestrewn Crest (and you get 2 Khajit as well) and take on the Dragon. It's a hoot!

As to the "...Living with the Dead..." thread, it's great, but it is rather specific to collecting bodies, particularly the bodies of specific, named persons.

Me, I just raise 'em and use 'em, I really don't care who they are. They're basically my meat shields. Sure it's fun to raise Ulfric or Neloth or whomever, but, frankly, I just don't really care.

I'd rather have hordes of meat shields, thus the stone!

Me, I prefer my antronachs and dremora. :)

It really irks me when I see some lucky necromancer get an army like this while I have to rely on psikotiics necromancy mod and his glass cannon excuses for warriors.

I might make a vanilla necromancer with undeath as my only necromancy mod and throw perkus maximum on instead....

I'm sorry. Forgive me. I didn't mean to be privileged. Frankly, at this point, with a horde at my back, I don't feel very privileged, I feel claustrophobic! :) BTW: This is on the PS3!

Question for you: am I experiencing a glitch, or does the game actually work this way ---- I kill a bandit outside of Embershard Mine, for example, and then cast Raise Zombie on him/her. I enter the mine (loading screen happens), and the zombified bandit enters with the mine me and....... immediately crumbles to dust. Do they not pass through 'transitions'?

Question again: I am fighting a bandit, and when I kill him and he drops his weapon. When I cast Raise Zombie on him, most of the time (75% or more, maybe?) he proceeds to run around trying to ineffectually punch enemies, rather than picking up the weapon that he had been using. If however, I pick up the weapon, place it in his inventory, and then cast Raise Zombie, it seems that sometimes he will use it and sometimes he won't.

Yes? No? So very confused.... but thank you for your information! :)

1) normal. I can't fastravel or go in to a new area with a raised one.

2) they do that. Especially at low levels.

Thanks for that confirmation of low-level weirdness :)

I would like to see how many the Ebony Warrior can kill.

I agree, but I don't think I can stand them for the next 55 levels!

BTW: They're still here! I'm down to 9 of the Drauger though. A dragon took out one of them (literally - it ate him!) before the rest of the horde took it down. :) Butch is kind of getting on my nerves though. He's so LOUD!

First of all, what are you doing what Lydia at level 22? LOL

Did you check your active affects to see what the timers where for the undead? Curious

Just hangin'. I only just did Dragon Rising (I've been doing other stuff) and happened to pick her up when I became Thane of Whiterun. Don't mind her too much. I've been adventuring on my own up until then.

Oddly, none of them are even listed in the active effects. Only the ones that I actually raise are listed.

I was going to ask you? What's wrong with Lydia at level 22? She doesn't even level out until 30 and she's a good warrior.

I realize that you've already defeated Miraak using a melon-baller and a slinky by level 22 and killed of Alduin by level 12, but, who would you be running with at level 22?
