Considering creating an Orc character that uses the strongholds as his bases of operations while avoiding the cities as much as possible. He'd specialize in smithing, heavy, and all forms of weapons-based combat using exclusively orc armor and weapons, (once able to make them, of course). He'll do no enchanting, alchemy, or magic of any kind. He will use the forgemaster's fingers to assist with his smithing endeavors. His followers will come from the strongholds, as will supplies and materials.

My main question is: can one actually live in any of the strongholds? What about safe storage? Throughout all my playing of Skyrim, I've dealt relatively little with the strongholds aside from forgemaster's fingers and Volundrung, so any useful information is appreciated. :beermug:

It's a good build idea, I like the immersion possibilities :)

I am fairly certain you can (at the very least) sleep in one or more of the beds after completing the "Cursed Tribe" quest at Largashbur. Also, in Narzulbur, near the Ebony Mine entrance, there is a small shelter with a bed that is unowned. I'd have to check in-game about the storage in the strongholds though.

As a side-note, the Alternate Start - Live Another Life mod allows you to start in one of the Orc Strongholds if you choose Orc as your character's starting race.

You can sleep in two longhouses if you take the key from the two Orc followers at Dushnikh Yal and Mor Khazhur. I believe you can also sleep in the stronghold relating to the Cursed Tribe quest, although it has a respawning attacking giant that can either be very good or very bad depending on your view.

Another thing to note is that you can't get Forgemaster's Fingers as an Orc, simply due to the fact that quest is only offered to non-Orcs who approach a stronghold prior to becoming Blood-Kin. As an Orc you get auto acceptance.

Safe storage is unlikely, but the chests you find through "Treasure Maps" are safe. This will give you various locations across Skyrim's wilderness to store items. You need to find the maps first though. I use some of them all the time if I don't have a house, or I can't be bothered buying a house.

There are various roleplay aspects to create characters for Orc Strongholds, I always enjoyed an Orc Hunter I had.

Largashbur has a couple of sleeping bags tucked away at the back of the village somewhere (guess they belong to the generic NPC orcs that usually get killed by the giant) these can be slept in for free.

i RPed an orc mage character who I decided was the son of Atub and she sent him away to train at the mage college for fear of him being attacked by Yamarz (she had a vision that he would become powerful and defeat Yamarz), and he ended up becoming dragonborn and arch mage before finally returning home to save his village from the curse.

Damn... and damn. I was hoping I could still retrieve the fingers. For safe storage I suppose I could procure Lakeview Manor. I'll need a practical place to hoard ingots that is near a forge or anvil. The only addition I would want is the armory, which I could fill with Orcish creations of doom. A treasure map chest could suffice for storage until then.

Very good. :beermug:
Thank you all for the help, I will update this thread when I create the character at some point in the near future.

How do you backstab a Dragon?
There are some miscellaneous barrels near the forge at Narzulbur that I've used occasionally on an Orc character that function similarly to the ones near Sword Maiden in Whiterun or, and this is just a personal preference, my last Orc cleaned out Bilegulch for Siddgeir and used it as a base of operations. There's a trunk in the mine that doesn't seem to respawn as long as I return every few days. He even married Borgakh from Mor Khazgur.

By and by, Grogzonk "Ale Fist" Urimog made it to Dushnikh Yal at level 2. He mined some ore, improved his armor a bit, and procured his first follower by beating him up. There doesn't appear to be anything else to do here however, so he will embark to Mor Khazgur because the UESP says there is an enchanted orcish battleaxe there, which, will surely help at these low levels.

Something interesting: Grogzonk encountered a bandit chief wandering the road to Dushnikh Yal. No bandits around, just the random chief. I wondered if he's always there. Following him, he walks the dirt path that leads to Dushnikh, and walks some way up and down the main road close to Markarth, then returning to the dirt path and back again.

He became hostile only when I went right up to him. I tried a few times but couldn't beat him, (master difficulty, level 2). So just for fun, I got him to chase me up to Markarth where he was attached by a farmer and a guard before three miners and a dog ran up to join in. From an RP perspective, it didn't happen. But I took his steel hammer. :beermug:
