After walking around a bit, its important to avoid losing companions and wait (just an hour) so they can catch up to you.

I recommend checking their regular hangout place, or using a fast travel. Either way, you will end up finding your companion (or better yet, horse)

ive never had a problem with that now my follower(i dont call them companions cause they dont talk to you) will take the right path when i go mountain climbing. they cant climb like you can. but i just cant find jenasa after i started the db quest. she never showed up at the drunken huntsman and i completed the db quest last week. im beginning to think she got killed by the db or somewhere along the way either to me or back to whiterun. idk im just guessing.

Sure enough, Aela was back at the lodge, and while she was wearing her 'default' outfit, she still had all the stuff I gave her in inventory. I know I never dismissed her, so I guess at some point she got lost and rather than catch up via Fast Travel, she returned to the lodge. I still suspect that joining the legion triggered the event.

I lost lydia for about 3 full dungeons! she had stuff i needed to sell and i knew she wasn't dead.
Her bed in my house kept saying 'owned' and i couldn't accept another companion.

I got the msg to say she was bored and went home but after waiting and waiting i couldn't find her, not in whiterun or breezehome and it was really winding me up.

Anyway i went afk inside breezehome while i made food IRL and when came back i could hear slight coughing and occasional sigh. i looked high and low and couldn't find anything.... then i had an idea to close all the doors and as if by magic, TADA, lydia appeared from behind a door upstairs!!

Quite how she got there i have no idea, she went home when i wasn't around and let herself in, if i had known she was playing hide and seek i would have found her earlier lol
Maybe other peoples companions are behind doors in their houses - its certainly worth having a look.

I do believe there should be a whistle you can use or a map marker for your companions so you know where to find them as they got lost far too easily

this usually happen when you using some shortcut.. like climbing to hill, the companion will using the proper way.. but because of the long distance I always just try to climb the mountain, its a bug, but its a shortcut.. what I did, when I arrive at the destination that mean I can fast travel to that place.. i just use the fast travel eventhough I already arrived, after that your companion and your horse will be at your side.
