So I decided to create a thief/assassin character, so of course I wanna level alchemy up. Anyone know any expensive potion/poison recipes for an apprentice alchemist? Many thanks

Queen of Procrastination
Potion of Waterbreathing

These potions worth at least up to 1200 Septims each. Because they are THE most valuable potions in Skyrim, they will also level you up faster than any other potion. If your speech and alchemy level is higher, so is the price. The effect of this potion, is being able to breath underwater for an X amount of seconds, increased Magicka and restore Stamina.
Pros: - This makes you rich fast.
- It increases your alchemy level rapidly.
Cons: - Ingredients are very difficult to come by.
- It is difficult to find a trader who can afford this potion. Usually you end up buying their merchandise just to be able to sell yours. This reduces the profit you make of it.

HISTCARP:
Fish appear at fish spawning sites. Each spawning site generates up to three fish, which are randomly selected from various types of fish. In ponds, histcarp have a 20% chance of appearing; in deeper water, histcarp have a 14% chance of appearing. There are 691 spawning sites in 128 different locations. Locations with the greatest numbers are:
SALMON ROE:
Salmon Roe can be found in interior locations such as a player-builthome and can be harvested from jumping salmon in streams. The player must stand in a stream or waterfall in order to catch the salmon that jump up. This can be a long and frustrating job that not everybody likes to do.

NOTE:
Garlic, Chicken's Egg, Nordic Barnacle, Salmon Roe and Histcarp are all the ingredients that can be used for this potion. Letting one out or adding another, has influence on the effect and the price of the potion.

This recipe was shown to me by another forum member and it is easy to create. The three ingredients needed are: Creep Cluster, Scaly Pholiota, and Mora Tapinella. All of these grow in abundance all over skyrim and you can plant them in your garden where you get multiples.

Creep Clusters can be found growing on rocks all over the area where the hot springs are.
Scaly Pholiota can be found in the Rift, growing on fallen trees and stumps. The trees with the white bark.
Mora Tapinella can be found pretty much everywhere else. It's a fungi that grows on mossy tree stumps and fallen trees.

The potion you make from using all three ingredients together is insane and levels you up quickly. Fortify Carry Weight + Fortify Illusion + Regenerate Stamina + Restore Magicka + Weakness to Magic.

I usually counter the cost of the potion when selling to merchants, with buying soul gems, so it's like a trade-off.

after levelling alchemy a few times the thing that seemed to work fastest for me was going in circles on the map buying up every ingredient from every alchemist there is, stopping at a property I own, sleeping for bonus, brewing everything up and selling it, then repeat. the first few rounds will cost a bit of gold but soon youll make a profit doing this, and it seems to go a lot faster than farming specific ingredients.

When I create brand new alchemists I find nothing beats potions made of blue mountain flowers and blue butterfly wings. Two of the most common and easily found ingredients in the world, cheap to buy from alchemists, and they create a nice expensive potion which gives a decent amount of experience thanks to the multi-effect. Blue mountain flowers and hanging moss have a similar effect.

I recently made a build based in part on the Maesters from Game of Thrones. This build has alchemy as one of its main skills, and the waterbreathing method is 100% true if you lack the money to go to one of the trainers.

this one follows the Sir Mithro'l Method:)..........also all the information by all the alchemist above.......braking bado_O

for more powerful potions & more expensive

make a set of enchanted clothing, with 25% alchemy each.......gloves, ring, amulet = 75%.....NO hat (25%)
instead of a enchanted hat at 25% Use Atherian Crown, activate mage & lovers stones.......20%+15%=35%
if not a werewole and you sleep....an extra 10% & if married and you sleep (hanky panky) it becomes 15% (I think)

make all your potions.....next step sell all your potions.........buy more ingredients........go make more potions......sell potions.....buy more.........
this will increase your speech leveling very fast, best perk to have: is the sell to any merchant perk.....so you can sell potions to blacksmiths ext

Just experiment with Giant's Toe - if you can defeat the giant, the potions made with this ingredient will sell for a lot of gold. Giant's Toe = profit.
Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the increase of the Alchemy skill also depend on the value of the potions in question?

Yes, very much so. Giant Toe + Wheat + Creep Cluster = Fortified Health, which equals a lot of skyrim coin. The profit you make off the potion itself will more than pay for other ingredients that you may have purchase.
