if you cant defend you home, then you are not a man! i like having a pile of dead bodies so my bard can sing my feats and my kids can be proud of me :) - tbh i have only built a house at lake view manor and the scenery is nice, and a good place for hunting as well :) - its really close to falksreach for supplies and close to riverwood as well

Which plot of land is best for a family in your opinion and why!?

Falkreath and the other homes you'd build are fairly buggy, and a few things don't work, at all. Plus there's the potential of bandits or Vampire's doing some kidnapping. As well as Dragon's ambushing you there, or even cultists.

The "best" home is in Solitude (I feel). Everything works, little chance of kidnapping (if you've already fought the war, then it's safe. And even if you haven't, it still is). There is a home you'll be given at Solstheim, but it's pretty dark, and only a couple of things don't work (display cases, shelves that hold ingredients).

I use Breezehome in Whiterun, but only to store loot I don't want to sell, and to keep two orphan girl's (Whiterun and Windhelm), and I leave Lydia with them, and work mostly solo.

It's a good location, in the middle of the province means it's not far from anywhere.

What I don't Lille is are the less than useless Steward's, house-Carl's or whatever. They're supposed to protect your stuff, and when bandits show while you're there, you're on your own.

I'm sure I got the name wrong but I would suggest Windstad Manor..

Great view and I think its a bit safer for the family..Hell in the back of Lakeview there is a conjuror thats pretty close and he doesnt look kid friendly.

I have them at Winstead also.

One of the kids, however, is obsessed about monsters in the nearby swamp. It's nearly all she talks about.

One of the numerous reasons I'm usually off on "some adventure," as the wife puts it.

Ehhh... I owned Heljarchen Hall with Agmaer as my Steward.. The few times I got attacked, he was always there to help.

Then when I owned Lakeview, I had Sven help me fight off a giant.. Sven died in the process but at least he tried.

You must have the girl from the Whiterun Marketplace? The one you had to get the Mammoth tusk for?

I think so.

I adopted 2 girls, the first was from Windhelm and I picked her because she was so pathetic.

The second was from Whiterun, I think. The universe pointed me at her in some fashion I don't now recall, so I basically had no choice.:)

My favorite home in the game is the one in Markarth. That Dwemer architecture is infectious.

Hearthfire homes take forever to build up completely, and I think the bandit mechanics and assaults on your house and property are dumb. It's almost like they're making a mockery out of you and you hard work.

My advice would be to just remain in the city homes. Much safer, and even they're pretty epic in their own right.

I've had all 3 houses, and heard all the same complaints from the various wifey-types at each. The last time, I finally got tired of hearing it, moved them to Solitude and stayed
in Heljarchen myself. Whenever I would be seen visiting Solitude, and unable to pretend that it wasn't me, I would visit Uthgerd and the kids. Surprisingly, she said she didn't have
any complaints. So, for matrimonial harmony, Solitude. Otherwise, Heljarchen seems best to me.

Each plot of land has their fair share of pros and cons, it really depends on which hold you prefer the most.
If you favor the woodlands of Falkreath, residing next to a lake and a nearby city for easy access to supplies and weapons, chose Lakeview Manor. The necromancer just down the hill is a small nuisance, but he's easily disposable. Bandits and wolves commonly spawn there.

If you prefer the marshlands near the Sea of Ghosts shore, with a imposing view of the arch to Skyrim's capital to the west, choose Windstad Manor. It's quite a distance from Morthal and Dawnstar, but not that far. Bandits, trolls and draugr spawn there occasionally.

And lastly, if you prefer the snowy tundra situated between Dawnstar and Whiterun, choose Heljarchen Hall. It's pleasant enough, and boasts a lovely sight of the auroras at night. Bandits, giants and frost trolls will attack randomly.

Each child you adopt and the wife or husband of your choosing has different opinions on all the properties, there will always be someone that likes and dislikes each spot, so it's all up to you.

Looking into all these factors about each land, I'd say Heljarchen Hall is probably the best to choose from. I personally enjoy Lakeview Manor the most, mainly because of the location; it's near the southern boarder of Skyrim, so it's warm, compared to the rest of the province, and I enjoy living near water.

Late as heck to the party but I think Lakeview is the best. Like I read in previous post I set up the family in Proudspire and use Lakeview as my solo retreat. I also arm my Carl and Bodyguard to the teeth so if anything does try a surprise attack they get cut down by my personal guards quickly. I love arming my Carls with Ebony Armor and weapons, enchanted jewelry, and standing back and watching them slaughter bad guys on their own.
