Hi, I've got a high level mage character (well, kinda high at level 38), but I've never used any Illusion magics. I just didn't see the point in them. Is there someone here who uses Illusion, and if so, is it good/fun?

I'm a sneak khajiit n I'm using illusion now. It is soo fun. She casts fury on a bunch of bandits n I don't even have to kill em. They kill each other! Hahaha! :D or pacify to make them not attack u n bash em upside the head lol.

Illusion spells are good, but make the game less fun, because it gets too easy. You can simply double charge the calm and fury spells to make almost everyone attack eachother or stop fighting. Being an assassin who uses illusion, I always calm everyone and then slit their throats.

The Master level illusion spells are especially fun. They're just like the lower level spells Fury, Calm...but they're aoe and one other that I can't put my finger on at the moment:D

You can cast the fury one, get out of the way and watch them kill eachother.

You can cast the calm one and pick them off one by one with no danger. (Or aoe the s**t out of them :p)

So, Illusion is a valid school? I'm going to start a new mage character, is Illusion worth the perk-points?
If I'm gonna focus on Illusion, Conjuration (can't live without those Dremora Lords :p), Destruction (Shock and Fire), Restoration and Enchanting. Does that sound like a good build?

If you're good, you can master illusion and destruction and be able to kill entire hoards of enemies without even using conjuration and without taking a single hit.

Try this guide. I just added an illusion section.
So you want to be a mage. [Guide] | Skyrim Forums

I like Illusion, but it tends to fall behind for me, and since the spells are all restricted by your enemy's level, they end up useless unless you take most, if not all, of the perks and double cast.

That's just my perspective though. On my new mage character I plan to level all schools though and I'm going to try to keep illusion relevant.

I've tried the Illusion/Conjuration route, but end up either using just one, or the other.

Using a Fury spell on those pesky "Hired Thugs" who slowly inch their way in your direction the first time is just classic, especially when near a town. The guards, townsfolk, and even the other hired thugs attack the one thug you hit with the Fury spell. People come out of the woodwork to jump the guy.

Conjuration and Illusion are both forms of "indirect" offense. Either getting your summoned creature to do your fighting, or your enemies to fight each other. Conjuration tends to eclipse Illusion as far as that is concerned, because if you Fury 3 bandits, you still have to deal with that last bandit that survives, where a conjurer can simply stay back and let his undead minions or atronachs finish fighting.

Thanks for all the tips! This will surely help me when starting a new mage. I guess I'll be giving Illusion a go then.

If you want to go Illusion and Conjuration, I'd recommend Necromancy. That way when you get down to the last guy, you can raise one of his dead buddies to finish him off.

Aren't atronochs stronger than zombies?

Yeah but the thing is if you use Atronachs with Illusion, you end up just using Atronachs. At least in my case. Also, it seems like Necromancy spells seem to level up Conjuration faster then Atronachs.

So basically, if you want to with Illusion as your main spell school, and Conjuration as a secondary, I think necromancy is a better way to go. If it is in reverse, I think Atronachs are better.

I have never been able to get the Fury spell to work. I am level 60 and nearly all the enemies I have are much higher than the level cut off limit the Fury works on. I have never even seen the effects of using it.

Maybe because you're an arrow slinger. That's probably why Fury doesn't work.

I mean....if you're level 60, almost every single monster in the game will be higher than the level 6 maximum for fury to work lol. Get to adept and use Frenzy, it works on higher levels. And Mayhem at master (and its aoe). And the illusion perks increase the maximum level monsters can be and still be affected by illusion spells.

Even with all the illusion perks and dual-casting, I don't think Fury will work at that level. You have to use a stronger spell, unfortunately.

Relaxing on Revis Island, with Revis and Holmes :(
Try a pure mage, destruction and illusion, no conjuring, no hired help, robes only, no shield spells, absolutely no fast travel, Expert or Master lvl.

Only then do you see the early necessity of Illusion spells. An Ice Wolf (for example) can easily kill you before you can kill it in the early going, only using destruction, and you can't easily outrun it. But you can Calm it and leave it be, or Calm it and set something else on it as a distraction (Even a deer). Or if you feel brave, Calm it, Wait until your magic is full, Firebolt it, then calm it again. Miss and you die of course ;)

Tacking illusion on to an already powerful character, doesn't show it real uses...The above Mage build is an adrenalin ride too, that can leave you exhausted, but quite pleased with yourself..

I use it all the time caster or not, Illusion spells are great for your friends, and they can save your horse. Depending on deep my horse is into combat I either cast calm or fear on it

Something fun to do is to fury a group, and when one of them dies, to use raise zombie or a similar spell, and have it keep fightin (normally they won't kill eachother, one will kill the other, and then come for you).

In my opinion illusion is better fitted for a thief/assassin rather than a mage. For example the spells muffle and invisibility, two great spells for a thief/assassin trying not to get caught.
