Of all the sneaky characters I've ever created, not one of them has ever pickpocketed. I'm thinking about exploring this skill when I create yet another sneaky character, but first, I want to hear from people that are using this skill or have used it in previous games. I know an enemy can be disarmed and killed by reverse pickpocketing poison, which really spurred my interest in the skill. What are some of the other advantages of this skill?

You can obtain items off of people without killing them. With the high-end perks that includes peoples equipped weapons and armour. Pickpocket gets you keys, quest items etc. as well. Another useful Pickpocket perk gives you bonus 100 carrying capacity.

Took me a while to get to grips with pickpocket, but stick with it and the rewards are high. Pickpocketing experience increases with every item you steal. and the more valuable the item, the more experience gained.

You CAN successfully steal items from people's pockets even while being detected, with people staring right at you. Being undetected does increase your chances of success, but don't feel that you have to be utterly invisible to stand a chance of succeeding.

Start off by stealing petty items such as food, drink and spare clothes that people are carrying. The guards are an ideal target to start off with, as there are many of them and they practically never notice their arrows disappearing. Keep an eye on the % next to each item - the higher the number the easier the item is to steal.

Gems and jewellery will give you tons of experience, so aim for them once you have improved a little. This is also a chance to gain some free enchanted items!

You only really need to upgrade the light fingers perk once or twice to increase your chance of success for stealing better items.

The cutpurse perk makes stealing gold easier. The more gold you steal, the more experience you gain. Once you have this perk, try paying for lessons then stealing the money back from the tutor and watch your levels shoot up!

The extra pockets perk increases your carry weight by 100 - VERY useful!

Key master is quite useless, as keys are easy to steal already, so ignore that perk.

If you do decide to aim for level 100 in pickpocketing, you can unlock the perfect touch perk - this allows you to steal equipped clothes and armour right off people's backs, so you can see them naked!

Honestly, I found after acquiring two or more pieces of Deft Hands, the ability to level up quickly was apparent. All-in-all, pickpocketing is the most annoying skill to level up, though, exploitation makes it a tad easier to cope. I wish pickpocket was moved into the mini-game category like lockpicking, myself. Something to do with reaction time button mashing, you know? That would jazz it up a bit.

While I seldom need the rewards that pick pocketing give, once you get going it is easy to quickly go Legendary and use the perks to improve another skill. This can be repeated often enough to be a useful legal glitch.

Also bear in mind you can't sell items you've pickpocketed, so they may end up encumbering you. If you've joined the thieves guild, this is easily remedied because they have merchants who can buy stolen goods. Otherwise you'll have to keep them, store them, dump them or wait forever until you get the black market speech perk.

But you can use stolen gems to create jewellery at a forge and I believe these won't be a problem.

I've joined the Thieves Guild in past playthroughs, but I've never got into the whole thief gig. I usually just ran through their questline to kill Mercer Frey, who I think is an absolute douche, and became a Nightingale and all the other stuff. I never pursued becoming Guild Master, because I always thought it was to boring doing all those jobs for Vex and Delvin. That's all going to change with the character I'm putting together.

I didn't pickpocket either on my first play through, but now I think it's pretty fun. ( Sleeping characters are usually easier, I find )

I would like to reiterate the point on carry weight for perks, as many posts before me have!

Also, you can see the percentile when going for a steal. Comes in handy.

One more thing, the more valuable the item, the faster your skill increases. Obviously. Oh, and I tended to stick with lighter valuables, and I'm not sure why.

Save, save, and save again.

How do you backstab a Dragon?
I'm not much of a pick-pocket fan. I just find it cowardly. That being said, I do love the reverse-pick-pocket perk, especially on an assassin. There is something awfully satisfying about doing it in a public place (and not getting caught) and then having your victim drop dead right there in front of everybody while you stand innocently off to the side acting all surprised. It's also great for eliminating Hemskr.

That's the main reason I'm getting into the skill. Coin isn't a problem in Skyrim, I've never had any trouble keeping a load of cash on me with any of my characters. I'm being seduced by the darkside of pickpocketing.

I love pickpocketing, especially when seen but not caught with my hand in their pocket ;D I don't think I've ever played a character that hasn't been a pocket thief. It's just really fun. My bosmer lives by the right to thieve after all; if you've got it, she'll take it! I started off pickpocketing the guards, reloading save if caught, dropping the bows and iron daggers and keeping any jewellery for enchanting purposes and mead/wine for rping.

My archmage vampire assasin is actually a good guy, levels it up only for a better chance to reverse pickpocket weapons enchanted with absorb health & stamina or shields that fortify health to aggressive townspeople, even magic-hating Nerds. Just started using the Poisoned perk, this paralysis thing def makes it easier.

I brew all kinds of poisons for this guy. He won't die, the insufferable wretch, but I can at least see him keel over.

I've knocked him out with VL form. Vampiric grip followed by Corpse curse. Such fun.

Only ever leveled pickpocket once. It's great for getting money back from trainers who don't sell stuff, like the orc chiefs who train master block and one handed. Pickpocket levels very quickly when you pickpocket skill trainers! Buy one skill level, pickpocket, buy another, pickpocket etc.

For a high level character it might be worth pickpocketing just for the extra pockets perk. I'm tempted to do that myself, now. Three perks for 100 extra carry capacity seems worth it for a character over level 60. A bit like leveling alteration just for the magic resistance perks, if you can afford a few perk points you can get some good buffs

Hahaha this I gotta try. No bounty for that as well. *Vampire Lord Claw high five

Thought of feeding him a RestoLoop paralysis poison, but since it's crazy expensive, chances were nil. Knocked him down with a 5-second paralysis and gave it to him then. THIS DIDN'T WORK. Paralysis doesn't stack, apparently. Better off nocking an arrow coated with the stuff from the shadows. Heh heh he won't drink the OP invisibility potion either, bec of course, I forgot that the Poisoned perk would only work for pickpocketed POISONS :')) Would've been hilarious, him paralyzed AND invisible.

Captain Lonely-Gale did a good job of pretending he wasn't there, tho.
