Hey everyone,

So I was playing Skyrim when suddenly a CTD occurred. It was near Falkreath and on the road to Helgen. I have no idea what causes it or how to solve it.

It always happens when I'm passing this point:

It's around this area on the map:

I have heard that this is a common issue, but I haven't found a solution yet. Some people of the modding community where talking about conflicting texture mods, but I don't have any of those installed. At least; I assume that the handful of armor re-textures wouldn't conflict with the Falkreath hold?

I'd really appreciate some help with this. I am trying to get to Helgen and it's frustrating that the game crashes right before I arrive.

***UPDATE***

  • I tried getting to Helgen some other way, but the CTD seems to occur by just entering the hold.
  • The CTD is not exclusive to one character. This happens with all my characters.
  • I don't have mods that specifically alter Falkreath hold. I only have one texture mod for Windhelm and two texture mods for steel -and leather armor.
  • I verified the integrity of my game cache.
  • I installed the unofficial Skyrim patch.
  • I don't seem to have any of the mods that are infamous for causing this issue.

hmm is the mod legendary cities maybe?

I assume its not expanded towns and cities?

quick googling seems to suggest scenic carriages might be causing problems, if you have that; also reading reports of trouble with wet&cold & loading certain areas.

I don't have scenic carriages. To my knowledge, I also don't have legendary cities. However, I do have a mod with a retex of Windhelm?

I suspect it's this mod that adds like a little fisherman's village at Falkreath's border. I don't know, though. I am just guessing at this point.

theres another thing you can try which I did when I experienced some crashes outside windhelm which seemed to work, I just can't remember what it was called. It had to do with how the game uses memory, and changing some numerical value in a config file orso from 512 to 768.
I don't have much more time right now, but you should find it if you search for skyrim memory allocation skse patch or something like that. Maybe that'd help.

If nothing helps go for the deactivate and re-activate stuff one by one until you can identify which mod might cause the problem.
Theres also a method to create log files that could help identifying where the problem is by logging what the game did last before a crash.

Hmm. I guess I have no other choice but to reinstall mods. I'll wait a few more days, though. I have about 100 mods and it will be quite the task. The weird thing is that I haven't installed anything new as of late. This glitch suddenly just appeared.

I hope anyone here can help me with this issue. It's a well-known problem so there should be someone out there with the answer.

I heard that scenic carriages was a problematic mod that would often cause CTD's in the Falkreath hold. I didn't have that mod, but decided to install it anyway. My reasoning was that, if this mod often conflicted with Falkreath hold, installing it might "solve" the problem. After all, if it alters the game mechanics near that region, it might just fix whatever it is that was broken.
...So I did this, and at first it worked fine! My glitch on the Falkreath hold as a whole was gone. But that didn't solve all my problems; whenever I got on my plot of land, I experienced another CTD. This CTD seemed to be unique for Lakeview manor. Hence why I ended up uninstalling scenic carriages.

I couldn't find any mod that directly altered the area around my house. So I just started to delete 1 or 2 houses that were located around that area. I deleted a custom hunter's lodge that was located near the lake in Falkreath. Since it didn't cause any problems for me before, I assumed that this wasn't the conflicting mod. However, when I deleted it (and de-activated the plugins) things were working fine again.

...Now, maybe the glitch is still "there". I haven't explored 100% of the hold. There might be a little corner, cabin, river, bridge, path or pass that is still glitched. Who knows. Maybe I get a CTD again within a few days. But for now everything seems to be fine and whatever it is I did; it worked.

Would like to thank the author of this thread for reminding me why I never bothered with mods.

Mods usually don't conflict if you know what you're doing. And if it does conflict, you can fix it easily. I personally think the hundreds of hours of gameplay that you can just get for free using mods are worth the risk.

Funny. That was my initial reaction when I saw a mod thread in this section.

Funny. It was also my first reaction when I saw that you eat lotuses.

I well aware of mods and how they function. No need to sugarcoat them for me.

Sorry. I just don't like exclusionary conversations in a general area especially when there is a section dedicated specifically for mods. By the way, the name is a reference to a mythological tale.

exclusionary conversations?
It wasn't exactly like Anouck started a thread going "well this is a safe space for me and Mithro'I to talk and I want nobody else to chime in" now was it?
OP had questions and I tried to help with my limited abilities. It just so happened nobody else contributed.

Granted, a different section might have been more appropriate.

It's in this section because, when I posted this thread, I had no clue if this was an existing glitch or one that was caused by mods. I also didn't know if it had anything to do with the hearthfire DLC. Therefore I didn't know whether it should be in the Skyrim Help or Mod section. Hence why I posted it in the general discussion. Granted; with the knowledge of a mod being the main cause of the issue, it should've been in the mod section. But I did not know that back then.

Things get posted in the wrong sections. That happens.

General section is basically for all kinds of stuff, I'd say mods are included in there. If it was terribly misplaced, as a mod question in the Introduction section, I would've understood your annoyance. Overall I just think you kinda overreacted on it.

Sure, afterwards it might have suited the mods section better, but as @Anouck said, she didn't know it was a mod related problem.

Sorry. I just don't like exclusionary conversations in a general area especially when there is a section dedicated specifically for mods.

Skyrim General receives more traffic than the other boards, so to get views/help quicker it is the best location for it.

Mods are as much a part of TES as lore is in the game, Bethesda have always been favored towards a modded Elder Scrolls even releasing a few "official" mods for their titles.
