Hjerim in Windhelm and Vindrell Hall in Markarth are the best two houses probably. Proudspire Manor is over-hyped and just not that great for the price. Honeyside in Riften is quaint, but it's also dull and only has 5 containers! Breezehome is only so popular because it's easy. I really wish that there was a harder to get, but awesome house in Whiterun; it could be styled like the Temple of Kynareth, the Greymane's house, or the Battleborn's house. I'd love this because it'd make Whiterun a more livable place. I really think that it is one of the best cities, but the house is just too lowbie-oriented.

It's also the only House with a warm bedroom strategically placed over the hearth on the floor below, which is probably why Lydia preferes to hang out there instead of her own bedroom. :p

Lol, Lydia is always creeping at the table in my room. It's annoying because she has odd dialogue like, "can I help you!?!" and other sassy stuff like that. It's not that I want the entire of Skyrim to bow to the Dohvakiin, but it'd be nice for those sworn into my service to at least be a minimum of polite.

I think she sits there because that's the only chair she is scripted to sit in at Breezehome which was kind of poorly thought out IMO. They should have put a chair in her room and scripted her to sit in one of the seats downstairs as well. Lydia is polite with the exception of her exchange inventory dialogue and even that one is civil if transparently sarcastic. It keeps me grounded. :p

That's interesting, I had no idea that NPCs had to be scripted to specific objects, I thought that they just had a behavior pattern that would treat all objects easily, neat. I think it may be bugged on my game, because she says the stranger-why-are-you-in-my-house dialogue to me.

Markarth simply for it's design and it has the largest book shelves. (I like collecting books) Breeze home is a close second for me because of its location next to the wide open tundra. I just wish it had an enchanter. I hate having to go all the way up to dragon's reach. but it's conveniently close to the black smith.

The most luxurious is Proudspire, the most functional is Hjerim, and my personal favorite is Vindrell Hall.

Hjerim is my favorite in the vanilla game, but with all the mods out there.... Let's just say, I'm a purveyor of fine lodging, and have more homes than anyone could ever need.

Hjerim's my favorite, mostly because I like showing off my stuff. The only problem is that windhelm is a depressing sinkhole of misery and snow.

Vlindrel Hall (Markarth) is my favorite house by a country mile. It is freaking huge!

The Alchemy and Enchanting rooms are great, in the alchemy room you have a satchel and barrels for your potions. In the enchanting room you have various racks for your weapons, and a small cupboard just outside for your soul gems.

It has two big living rooms which again are great for storing various objects, not to mention the 3 huge book cases you have. I'm a collector of books so having my own library was a great thing!

The bedroom is also great here, you have tons of storage for all your different items. I'm the type of player who likes everything to be organised, so I have cupboard for jewels/gold, Masks/Claws, Daedric items, then the weapons chest, the clothes wardrobe, and another two cupboards for scrolls and a misc draw.

The best thing about Vlindrel hall is the price, it's only 8,000. It is definitely better than Hjerim which is 12,000 iirc. And going by value it's better than Proudspire Manor which is a shocking 25,000.

I've never bought Vindrell hall (I could never find the jarl of marrkarth) but now I feel like I need to go do that.

I really like Breezehome a lot. It has a good amount of storage, and I really like the satchel on the alchemy table. I just got Honeyside and I really like that home too. I love the back entrance, the garden and the lake view. The only thing I really don't like is the lack of containers in the alchemy/enchanting room. In my other game my main house was Pridespire Manor. I really like Solitude. The only house I haven't bought yet is the one in Markarth.

Breezehome by far. It's like the Ikea slogan, "a home doesn't have to be big, just smart". I think it has more logical storage than the other houses and it continues to be my home base no matter what others I have obtained. I also do a lot of smithing so being right next door to Warmaidens serves me well. I like to hand decorate and the shelves in the living room are great for displaying helmets, I've got the diningroom table all set nicely and am well under way in the alchemy lab too.

Hjerim is my museum. Markarth is my home, and Breezehome is my memorial to Meeko .

Ok, so I've had a bit of a change of heart. I think Hjerim is now tied with Vlindrel Hall. I recently finished the Stones of Barenziah quest and now find more gems in ruins than I know what to do with, and throwing them in all the display cases in Hjerim makes them look damn pretty.

To be honest I've only ever owned Breezehome and Hijerim, but I'd have to say Hijerim is my favorite simply because it's larger and more open, has plenty of display cases etc. and feels more like a home fit for a Dovahkiin to me, only thing I dislike is the fact there's only one chest, the rest are just cupboards and stuff. Gonna have to check out the one in Markarth after reading some of these posts.

I like Hjerim because in a way it feels warm, especially after walking in from outside in Windhelm. Vlindrel Hall feels sophisticated, but has no doors for the master bedroom or housecarl's bedroom  Breezehome doesn't feel special, since it's so small and easy to acquire. Haven't bought Honeyside or Proudspire Manor.

I'm sure if you asked your housecarl to go for a walk around Markarth for awhile so you could get your freak on, he'd be happy to. Doors can be worked around.

I definantly like the one in markarth. It has storage right by the enchanting and alchemy tables unlike proudspire hjarm or honeyside. There isn't as many display spots but there is tons of storage and the view is beautiful. When u step outside. The one in windhelm is nice too but I don't like working on leveling up there because the storage isn't close. Nice museum though. The only good thing about breezehome is the blacksmith being close. After I get my smithing to 100 I move. And that's the first thing I try to level uup lol. Markarth has to be my favorite

I think the soltitude house is pointless and expensive and not worth buying. I would consider to buy all the other houses except soltitude, because soltitude is the least favourite house.
I never "Legally" purchased it. Found a trick online and got the house for free. No way was I dropping that much gold on a house.
