I never really experimented much with races or consistent characters before - always played Breton or Nord and ended up with a rather random character who did all sorts of nice things the one moment but ran off assassinating and stealing the other. Also I usually joined all the guilds simply because I like them all.

But that random style of playing is getting really boring, so I'm thinking of cleaning up my savegames and characters and starting 4-5 new ones who are consistent in their behavior, fighting techniques and factions.

For example:
The totally obvious one - a stormcloak Nord in heavy armor wielding large two-handed chunks of steel, starting in Windhelm to buy Hjerim, maybe building Heljarchen Hall into a bulky mancave later.
Or:
Magey magey altmer (if I find a mod to make them somewhat less ugly) leading the college, searching arcane wisdom.

I know many of you are playing consistent characters, and you guys probably invest a lot of thought into laying out a story that is appropriate for who your character is. So tell me about it! Who is your Dragonborn? How does their race, character or background determine who they are in skyrim?

Also on a side note, do you recommend the "alternative start - live another life" mod for this purpose & does it offer options for various kinds of characters & races?

I'm looking forward to hearing your characters story!

SPOILER ALERT

this one always wanted to try this type of MODo_O.....but is afraid it will muck up something in the future quest wise:confused:.......has similar things happen with other mods:sadface:
after that if you have no issues with it MOD go for it......a new story unfolds.....the Nord sounds good especially if you have some good male mods, no not those types:oops: and cool armors, Windhelm has a very strange feel to it...so nice when its not snowing

side story recommendation........do the war first, then start the main quest, no dragons that way (you pay the price in main quest, different characters)

this one is a Lunari.......see this one blog for her story & mod list
:)

I don't normally create any kind of backstory. I prefer to use the early game to develop my backstory using certain NPC's to give my 'backstory' alot more meat. I don't start 'playing' until about lv70 or so.

Pop a few arrows from a distance, close in, send in the spiders, lay down some tentacles and flames, throw a few Frenzy Runes as I close in, start throwing Poison/Flame Runes once to the scene, keep people in line with Targe if they try to escape the tentacles while slashing with Mehrune's Razor. I'm on PS3 so I don't use any mods.

I don't always become Dragonborn. I will stay in Riverwood for a bit after escaping Helgen, and I will honor Alvor/Gerdur's request to meet the jarl as repayment for taking me in when I needed a place to stay. But once Farenger asks me to head into Bleakfalls Barrow I usually decide "Nope. I've done my bit to aid with the dragon threat. I'm not getting involved with some wizard's research, he can find someone else to do that task for him." Then I will wander off and do my own thing.

My new favorite method of role-playing is to stick to one hold. I might join the local faction, or I might just do odd jobs for people so I can earn cash and slowly work up my character's confidence to the point he or she feels ready for some adventure. I will usually become thane of this particular hold and tour the nearby dungeons and landmarks with my housecarl or other follower who I befriended in the same area.

I do recommend becoming an odd-jobber to start off with. Cutting wood for people, picking crops for farmers, accepting menial delivery quests. It might be that my character simply does not want to become an adventurer or mighty dragon slayer or sword for hire just yet, he has been through a horrific experience at Helgen and right now he just wants to earn a bit of cash and drink in the tavern or maybe dabble in alchemy or keep himself busy at a forge. This allows me time to connect with the local people so I start to feel more involved with their community - I'm not just some random stranger passing through on my way to a dungeon, I've become one of their neighbors. And eventually something interesting may come along that will require me to head into danger. A friend wants me to retrieve something from a cave or bandit hideout. The guards won't help him so I pluck up the courage to head out myself (or I simply want a bit more cash, depending on my character's personality) and eventually I develop a taste for adventure.

To avoid doing everything I will give my character some prejudices. So he won't join the Companions because his family thinks they're a bunch of glorified thugs and they don't want him to end up like that boy that was killed by Uthgerd. Or he won't join the mage's college because his family were harmed by sorcerers so he despises magic. He doesn't want to go poking around in tombs to disturb the dead because he thinks they should stay at rest. Or his family were harmed by Forsworn so he becomes a Forsworn hunter wandering the Reach looking for asses to kick. Maybe he simply doesn't like the cold snowy weather up north so he sticks to the Southern regions of Skyrim.

If I stick to a limited method of role-playing, then I find that I start to miss the quests and activities that I've been avoiding, so in time I will start a new character with a completely different personality and have his story play out in completely different way. This makes me feel that I really have been playing two different games instead of just playing the same game with a different looking character.

.

I really like this one. In the major cities, there are quite a large number of odd jobs you can do for people. Obviously you need to do several to become a Thane, but even after you reach that status, its fun to hang around and really make it you home. I have done this in Markarth with my Orc. The city is close to the Orc strongholds, and has 2 Orsimer blacksmiths in the city which I have recently invested in (Speech perk).

I also done this in Solitude with my High Elf Mage. I Roleplay that the Radiant Raiment elves are her Aunts.

With a bit of imagination (which is why I love Skyrim so much), it is easy to immerse yourself into their lives. My biggest word of advice is to pick one or 2 things that your character excels at and stick with it. As they get more developed, introduce other skills slowly. All of my characters have skills they will not use, or dont use until a certain turning point in the game. GroBenjii (my Orc) hated all forms of magic until he came face to face with the most powerful vampire he hopes to hunt (Lord Harkon). After realising that physical prowess may not be enough, he than delves into learning restoration magic to give himself an edge (and a new way to level up).

Its all about working out how you want to develop your character and thinking 'how would they react to this situation' that gives this game its replay value IMO.

I like to imagine NPCs as my relatives as well. My female Imperial was the niece of Arcadia, and she would gather wood for the Bannered Mare and spend a lot of time outside the city walls helping the farmers pick crops and also gathering herbs and flowers to use in her aunt's shop. She ended up volunteering at the Temple of Kynareath, and that's where she took on her first dangerous mission to retrieve Nettlebane, and she hired the services of Janessa to help her fight the witches, and the two of them went on to have many adventures together and became a romantic couple.

My Orc wizard was the son of Atub, and she had a vision of him becoming powerful and freeing Largashbur from a dark shadow, but she feared he would be attacked by Yamarz so she sent him away. He ended up becoming Dragonborn and Arch Mage of Winterhold and therefore was not destined to rule Largashbur, but he did free his homeland from Yamarz' weakness.

Molag-Baller

The real Robin Hood
My baby is my bosmer. Gorgeous girl - I don't mean I'm attracted to her just to clarify - sneak thief, cannibal archer werewolf. I had a long, hard thought as to whether making her a lycanthrope would work considering the green pact and all, but in the end made some next level back story up about why she was in skyrim in the first place and how she'd been shunned by her people for taking an interest in shape shifters. Wears forsworn armour or savior hide. Never wears a hood or hat covering. The elf armour looks too clunky imo for a race that lives and breaths the forest.

My orc second character, made so I could join the vampire side, always wears stereotypical heavy armour, favours two handed, hates magic, has never set foot in the rat way and doesn't really use shouts beyond any needed for quest lines.

So after reading your replies and putting a lot of thought into the matter, I started two new characters:

The first one is a female Nord named Bryn Thunder-Heart, a typical warrior in Heavy Armor with a two-handed sword. Nothing special yet since I just started playing her. Thanks to the Alternate Start mod, she was no prisoner to be executed in Helgen but started off as Erik the Slayer's childhood friend in Rorikstead. I like to imagine that she's an orphan and was raised by his parents along with him like a sibling. One day they ran off to adventure, and upon returning she realized she just isn't for farm work but destined to be an adventurer. Together they traveled to Whiterun, but parted ways since Bryn wouldn't stay there but travel to Helgen to see what the dragon rumors where all about.
Bryn is going to be Dragonborn and follow the main quest eventually, but I think I want her to join the companions first, and maybe also the Stormcloaks. She'll follow a string set of morals - no stealing, murdering etc. and she'll eventually become Thane of some hold (I haven't really decided on one - I think she would fit in with Whiterun but that's a very easy hold with little to do) and buy a nice house.

My second character is Dunmer, also female, and thanks to a facial enhancement mod I found really really pretty. Name's Svari. I picked the 'shipwrecked' start for her since I felt like she should be new to Skyrim, maybe on the run from something.
After struggling out of the ship and to the coast, she kind of freaked and killed the first person she came across (Deekus) for dry clothes, food and a place to sleep (I'm using a mod that adds need for food, drink and sleep when I play her). She'll be a real fighter, clawing her way through any situation no matter what measures have to be taken. I was originally going to have her join the Brotherhood and make another character for the thieves guild, but I think I'll have her join both because the mix of equipment from both guilds is so damn handy.
So far she has made her way through the cold nord to Windhelm, picked up rumors about the little boy contacting the assassins and for some reason decided to follow through with it. Now she's in Riften and of course Brynjolf noticed her and invited her into the Ratway. It'll be fun.

I like the idea of sticking to one hold though, and I'll definitely look into that. For Svari that'll be Riften now, and I'm planning to start at least one or two more characters (mage and archer) - they'd be great for Solutide or Winterhold for the mage and maybe Falkreath for the archer.

She's a feisty redhead.

Secondary weapon is Dragonbone sword, also enchanted
Armour of choice is: DragonScale. All with archery and one-handed enchantments on them
Magic: only a bit of fire.
Skills in order of importance:Archery, One-handed, Sneak, Enchanting, Smithing, Destruction

Lives at: Breezehome and then Lakeview Manor.
Main follower: Valdimar (Housecarl from Morthal)
Quests: Main quest, Companions, Thieves guild, Dragonborn, Dawnguard (Sides with Dawnguard) Civil War (Sides with either side, depends on how I am feeling), Dark Brotherhood (Destroy the DB)

I also have Lu'ah. A Redguard pirate queen who duel-wields bound swords and is a mage/warrior.
She's a little evil so will do the thieves guild and Dark Brotherhood quests. She is very proficient in magic especially fire runes and shock spells. Will dally with the Daedra if it suits her needs as well. Lives in Winstad Manor in Morthal. Does not marry pf have children. Has no followers most of the time.

Newest character is like my assassin Shadow. Evil character. Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild only as well as Daedric quests.

Hey Kattus, fellow female German Skyrim addict from Berlin ;-) I started my second char 2 days ago, and it is a female Dunmer too, and based in Riften as well ;-)

I will try and rp more with her - with my first char, I kind of "took everything in", except the mage questline. So with Berenu (my Dunmer thief), I will finally try magic in earnest. Also, she will be joining the Imperials or staying neutral (my first char Idun Raven-Feather is a Stormcloak).
Don't know where it will take her aside from that...

I really like the idea of consistent rp characters (though Berenu probably won't be a "perfect" rp char), and I'm curious to read more of yours!

My current character I've gotten to level 55, which is pretty high for me as I tend to get new ideas and stop playing. And she's got relatives in-game as well: she's Thongvar and Thonar Silver-Blood's little half-sister, now estranged because:
a) She's the daughter of that horrible gold digger who took up with our foolish elderly father then ran off to join the Vigilants of Stendarr after he died, leaving us with the kid.
b) She can not only do magic, she's good at restoration and alteration. A mage Nord, the shame! The fact she is also good with a sword and bow does not lessen the humiliation of her magical ability.
c) She eloped with Omluag, a penniless smelter worker which was bad enough, and he was also a Reachman which is unforgivable.

Dawnguard quests are her priority as she joined to avenge her mother, but she does other quests if they are nearby because being raised by an absent mother and unhappy brothers gave her low self-esteem and she likes being praised. Serana is her inseparable friend. They are both clingy types who spent a great deal of their childhoods lonely and have massive mummy and daddy issues, so they suit each other perfectly.

Quite often I pick one house for my family when playing, but as Swanhilde goes all over Skyrim for the Dawnguard and was bought up surrounded by wealth and extravagance I've been having her buy houses all over the place which her family move between.

His weapon is the Tusk of Doom, dragonbone mace enchanted with chaos damage and shock. His shield is Alduin's pelvis, made from... Alduin's pelvis. I have one consistent character that I have been using since I got this game for PC, I have others as well, but they come and go:

My Character:
Male Imperial Spellsword - Cassius the Vanquisher (lvl 81)

General Appearance:
Fairly taller than the average Imperial, muscular build (but not bulging with huge muscles), brown hair that reaches just above the collarbone and also has a nice trim beard (he has a weak chin, had to cover it up, lol), and has golden eyes. Has a dark green face paint (number 13 on the slider for Imperials), and has a vertical scar underneath his left eye.

Weapons and Armor:
Sword - Dawnbreaker (legendary upgrade)
Staff - Wabbajack (because it's fun)
Steel Plate Armor Set (minus helmet, legendary upgrade)
Targe of the Blooded Shield (legendary upgrade)
Red Cloak (added from a mod)

CB1FFAA6299176475A3D1C82C2F8CE39FEDD79F9

Personality:

Shrewd, fearless and collected in battle, but generally a quiet yet kind man. He enjoys traveling the lands, searching for lost treasures and hunting bounties. Despite his endless adventures, he also likes to drink and socialize at the local inns.

Schools of Magic:
Destruction - favors lightning/shock and fire spells, and others added from the Forbidden Magic Mods.
Restoration - generally uses adept level spells such as Close Wounds and Heal Others.
Alteration - generally uses Candlelight, Detect Life/Dead, Transmute and Paralyze.

Favored Shouts:
Unrelenting Force
Fire Breath
Call of Valor
Dragon Aspect

Guilds and Other Affiliations:
The Companions (Harbinger)
College of Winterhold (Arch-Mage)
Dawnguard (Vampire Hunter)
Imperial Legion (Legate)

Homes:
Native Home: Rosethorn Hall - Skingrad - Cyrodiil
Current Home: Elysium Estate (mod) - Whiterun Hold (west of Pelagia Farm) - Skyrim

Fighting Style:
Focuses on far-ranged strategies, seeking out targets with the Detect Life or Dead spell, then strikes unsuspecting enemies with destructive magic. If more are present and notice him, Cassius surprises them with paralyzing magic. Unmoving, he finishes them off with Dawnbreaker.
When fighting dragons, he sticks to structures and forested areas when available to avoid breath attacks. He tends to use Storm Call or Dragonrend shouts to get the upper hand in battle, either bringing the dragon to the ground or heavily damaging it with bolts of lightning from the heavens above.

Backstory:
Hailing from the province of Cyrodiil, Cassius ventured to Skyrim after hearing about the Stormcloak uprising and wished to assess the situation and assist in any way. Shortly after crossing the southern boarder, he unfortunately got caught between an ambush between the Imperial Legion and the Stormcloaks. Mistaken for a renegade rebel, he was captured and taken to Helgen to be executed. After escaping Helgen, discovering the resurrection of dragons and his dragonblood, Cassius helped vanquished the bane of Alduin and ended the civil war.

ArcaneBelleza! Why is your character so god damn handsome?:rolleyes: You sure have done a great job in modding your Dragonborn to prettyness. I wouldn't mind reading your mod list

Soooo - I for once am having lots and lots of fun with this newfound roleplay strategy. I'm at 3 characters now:
- stealthy one-handed Dark Elf Thief / Assassin 'Svrai'
- brave two-handed Nord warrior girl 'Bryn Thunder-Heart'
- Wood Elf with a bow and alchemist 'Asra'

Asra is my latest project, unfortunately I couln't give her an alternate start because it clashed with the wood elf race tweaks and I prioritized the latter. So she stumbled into Skyrim, struggled about for a bit and dropped the main quest after first talking to Farengar and being sent to do his dirty work. She is a hunter and spends a lot of time tracking animals or helping around farms. She's also into alchemy which is a first for me. I originally wanted her to live either near Falkreath or Riverwood and got two shacks via mods, but both areas bore me to death. I can't find quests, no matter how hard I look. I finished the Werewolf quest in Falkreath and that's about it. I'll probably have to check out other areas although I don't want her to travel all over the map. She should also stay in the less snowy parts of Skyrim. Also I don't want her to be aggressive - she'll defend herself against bandits, yeah, but she's not yet at a point where she'd initiate a fight or clear a bandit fort. She might get there one day.

I'm already thinking about new characters, I like having several of them and playing whatever suits my mood. I'd very much like one that is based in and around Solitude, it'd make sense to have that one join the civil war on Imperial side. I haven't decided on a race and lifestyle yet though - I actually want to add a Khajit and a High Elf mage, but neither of them would fit into the Solitude idea. Maybe an Imperial then and I'll just have to see about weapons and abilities so it won't get too similar to other characters.

Kalin of High Rock

Faal Lun Vahdin
I've had a few fairly consistant characters over the years now. A dunmer archer, a breton pure-mage.

I like my Redguard berserker best of all. Light armor, large weapons. She steals upon her enemies on stealthy, silent feet. But once in range she gives a piercing battle-cry and sprints to the attack. She's upon the enemy as the first of them are fumbling to draw their own weapons, cutting them down like so much chaffe. They die with their curses half unspoken.

-2-Handed Weapons
-Light armor
-Stealth
-Archery
-Block

She is Shian of Rihad. She is The Redwind.

The Riddle of Steel: Shian uses only steel weapons and armor. Light Steel Armor (mod) and Skyforged Steel greatsword.

Imperial Dogs:
Shian hates The Empire for the abandonment of Hammerfel to The Dominon long ago. She sees this playing out much the same in Skyrim. Drawn to the plight of the Nords, who have always been worthy and honorable foes, she has pledged her sword-arm to Ulfric until such a time as Skyrim stands free: A staunch Stormcloak, Shian will attack imperial forces outside of cities and holdfasts.

Die On Your Feet: Shian only kills the brave. Cowards that soil their britches, toss aside their blades and grovel at her feet for mercy are beneath her. She is a true warrior; yeilds must be honored until the enemy finds the courage to die with honor. Anything less would brings dishonor on her and offend her Yokundan gods.

Theift is bad. Plunder's okay!
: That doesn't belong to you, Shian. Not until you've killed its owner. Plunder! The sacred right of the victor. Theives crawl on their bellies and take what doesn't belong to them. You wouldn't want to be some kind of lowly thief, would you? This rule layers nicely with the previous one. Slaying an unarmed man because she likes his boots wouldn't be acceptable at all.

She has a few other, minor rules and quirks. She mistrusts mages, vampires and other unnatural creatures. She won't leave person or creature to die in a cage.

Since I started playing i always make my characters consistent. Some characters are exclusive to certain guilds and as much as possible i avoid factions that contrasts their skills. I had a warewolf female dragonborn who specializes in one handed, light armor and restoration. Her factions are Companions/Blades/Dawnguard. The other one is an orc nightblade, specializes in illusion, sneak, alteration and has both affiliations with the college and dbh. I downloaded a mod that lets tolfdir become the archmage instead of the pc. My orc is much more invested in murdering people.

There are also rules that i have to apply whenever i roleplaying, such as, no looting/stealing unless you have to (quest related items/ potions when in near death) if i'm playing a lawful character. No involvements with the daedra, if i were to roleplay a priest. Zero detection if i wish to play as a master assassin or thief.

Some mods can enhance the immersion of you gamplay. Alternate start is my personal favorite, and npc knockout overhaul if you'r playing a good character who detests murder.

Haha, thanks! ^^ Honestly, it took a whole lot of experimenting, and I only use a few mods for my character's textures:

- Inhabitants of Skyrim - Character Presets by Rops1981
- SkySight Skins - Ultra HD 4K and 2K - Male Textures by fadingsignal (I use 2K version)
- High Resolution Scars by Xenius
- XCE - Warpaint and Dirt by Xenius
- ApachiiSkyHair natural Retexture by Hein84
- Beards by Hvergelmir

Your characters sound pretty cool, by the way. Really helps the roleplaying experience.
